OK, the Sectopods are now impossible to get past.
I played Enemy Unknown and the Sectopods were challenging, but not impossible. Enemy Within, they take 50% less damage. How are you supposed to get past them on the final mission? There's two of them, and they managed 2 critically wound two soldiers, and kill another. Those were my medics. How are you then supposed to complete the mission with the Ethereals?

I had 2 MEC's, 2 Supports and 2 Heavies. Both supports were psi. And I used Rift on a Sectopod (only one, cause they split up as soon as my Muton saw them).

:P I took over a Muton with mind control, then made him run up to them.
They will stick together if they kill the muton if you skip a couple turns (they will shoot through the walls n ♥♥♥♥ and most likely miss all their shots.) I then had my PSI soldier run up and use rift. Taking a ton oif their HP. I then had all 5 of my other soldiers pelt the two of them with bullets

Only one of them survived and he had 3 Health.

He died after my soldier took a Pot Shot at him :P
Hum, i play with 2 Snipers with squadsight+double tap. That way u can just engage the final alien and instantly kill it without having to deal with the other in the final room, as the mission is completed when the uber-etheral is dead. They also deal very valuable damage to all aliens without being inside their range, which makes them - imho - the most useful class.

edit: btw what difficulty?

Use snipers and a team that doesn't suck (supports suck)

were you doing an all support run or something?

I had two supports AND two heavies AND two MECS. Unfortunately I didn't have any good Snipers because of the last time I met a Sectopod(and for some reason, the RNG game me about half supports) I used supports cause of all their medikits, they were pretty strong and they were psi.

My point is, even using HEAT AMMO and Shredders, I got the crap blasted out of me, because the sectopods are so strong. I even tried the Muton thing, but the MC timed out so I used rift on him and the Sectopod.

Also, the Sectopods hit EVERY shot. Every shot they made. They have great aim (80 on normal as I was playing) and they hit with 9-11. The cluster bomb made a dogs breakfast out of my cover, and HEAT ammo only does +50% instead of 100% and the Sectos have 50% damage resistance anyway.

Should i have used telekinetic shield or whatever the 3rd tier psi ability is?

I'm chicken, I sit way back behind several walls between me and those things and drop green balls of death on them from a blaster launcher. Sure they are gimped against it, don't know why exactly other than to make it harder, but anyway, wtih two heavies I have 2 shredders and 4 fusion bombs (least that's what I still think of them as from the original xcom) to fire at it.

Failing that I've got 2 plasma snipers in the room with it mimetic skin and squadsight+double tap waiting to provide the coup de grace should the above prove insufficiently lethal.

As a result I get to shoot at them repeately, in fact 10 times, before they get to shoot at me. And even when they do, they only get to shoot at two of my guys, the snipers, because no one else is even in the room.

Ghost armor and or ghost grenades. They can get your squad in position to do the deed.

I'd keep the mec's, add a squadsight sniper, 2 assault class with alloys and ghost, and the heavy for the shredder. You could load one of the MEC's with heal just in case. Run and Gun with rapid fire make's short work of anything.

I've gone about it two ways. Get in postion and blast them with heat and snipers.

The second will probably suit you better.

Use one soldier to activate them on his first action and on the second pull way back. Its even easier if you can crawl close but not activate them with a sniper. Then use a battle scanner to spot them and shoot them with somehting else.

Now since your far back you can get them to move towards the ambush you've setup. And honestly focus fire them down. Heavies with Heat, shredder rockets still tear them apart.

Assaults with ghost armor, alloy cannons, run and gun, and rapid fire. Even one sniper with double tap really helps too. The end is easy if you use an assult like above to ghost armor his way up to the face of the end boss, then rapid fire his face off. Game over.

i guess u MECs are crapy equiped, means u use the useless minetrower instead of the Godlike EMP generator? MEC betwen Sectopods, EMP, Problem solved.....

One of my MEC's did have a minethrower, but I also had an EMP on the other. I had the minethrower because its my first playthrough of Enemy Within and i wanted to see what it does.

It wasnt very useful, i tried it out on the sectoid commander, and i had to finish him with another soldier.

It has its uses, mainly combo'd with battlescanners on long war

But I'd suggest disabling snipers followed by EMP and KInetic strike modules.

I think my experience might have been a fluke. Through my whole game, i never got a good sniper, as i turned one into a MEC and another was killed by a Sectopod. I had 2 by endgame and they were low rank, so I didn't bring them.

I suppose I was overconfident, as I'd annihalated all the aliens before the Sectopods with only one soldier being hit.
