They will stick together if they kill the muton if you skip a couple turns (they will shoot through the walls n ♥♥♥♥ and most likely miss all their shots.) I then had my PSI soldier run up and use rift. Taking a ton oif their HP. I then had all 5 of my other soldiers pelt the two of them with bullets
Only one of them survived and he had 3 Health.
He died after my soldier took a Pot Shot at him :P

were you doing an all support run or something?
I had two supports AND two heavies AND two MECS. Unfortunately I didn't have any good Snipers because of the last time I met a Sectopod(and for some reason, the RNG game me about half supports) I used supports cause of all their medikits, they were pretty strong and they were psi.
My point is, even using HEAT AMMO and Shredders, I got the crap blasted out of me, because the sectopods are so strong. I even tried the Muton thing, but the MC timed out so I used rift on him and the Sectopod.
Also, the Sectopods hit EVERY shot. Every shot they made. They have great aim (80 on normal as I was playing) and they hit with 9-11. The cluster bomb made a dogs breakfast out of my cover, and HEAT ammo only does +50% instead of 100% and the Sectos have 50% damage resistance anyway.
Should i have used telekinetic shield or whatever the 3rd tier psi ability is?
Failing that I've got 2 plasma snipers in the room with it mimetic skin and squadsight+double tap waiting to provide the coup de grace should the above prove insufficiently lethal.
As a result I get to shoot at them repeately, in fact 10 times, before they get to shoot at me. And even when they do, they only get to shoot at two of my guys, the snipers, because no one else is even in the room.
The second will probably suit you better.
Use one soldier to activate them on his first action and on the second pull way back. Its even easier if you can crawl close but not activate them with a sniper. Then use a battle scanner to spot them and shoot them with somehting else.
Now since your far back you can get them to move towards the ambush you've setup. And honestly focus fire them down. Heavies with Heat, shredder rockets still tear them apart.
It wasnt very useful, i tried it out on the sectoid commander, and i had to finish him with another soldier.
But I'd suggest disabling snipers followed by EMP and KInetic strike modules.
I suppose I was overconfident, as I'd annihalated all the aliens before the Sectopods with only one soldier being hit.
