is this possible?
I'd like to be able to play Enemy Unknown on my tablet. Specs are not an issue.

I am led to believe that I would have to buy Enemy Within for touch controls - however if I do that, is it then possible to play the original vanilla EU with touch controls?

I don't mind buying Enemy Within if I have to for this, but even if I do, I would ideally like to play the vanilla content first.

Note: it's a Windows tablet, and I'm talking about the PC version on Steam.

Actually, yes. Unknown was there for a while, but was taken down in favor of Enemy Within.

I have both on Amazon's appstore. The Amazon version is exclusive to FireOS (Kindle Fire HDX and Fire TV), but there's an iOS version on Apple's store and a widespread Android version on Google Play.

It's mostly feature complete, but I think one or two maps are missing and the zoom-in battlecam no longer appears in Enemy Within. It was there in Enemy Unknown, so I'm not sure why they removed it.

Amazon (Fire only): http://www.amazon.com/XCOM%C2%AE-Enemy-Within-Fire-Edition/dp/B00PDCP5PA/

Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tt2kgames.xcomew&hl=en

Google Play will tell you if your registered devices are compatible with it or not.

Ah, many thanks for your helpful post, but due to a failure on my part, there are wires crossed: I'm playing on a Windows tablet, which I use for some games on Steam.

I'm talking about the touch controls in the PC version. I'll edit my OP to make it clearer, and again thank you for taking the time to respond.

According to PCGamingWiki, you need a mouse to get to options > input, in which Touchscreen will be one of the input options, next to Keyboard/Mouse and Xbox 360 Controller (if you have one).

Yeah, I don't think that appears in Enemy Unknown, as far as I can tell - hence the question :(

I'd really prefer to play through the vanilla content first, even if I have to buy the expansion to get touchscreen controls - I'm just not sure whether it's possible to do that.

It should recognize your device no matter what version of the game you have, but you do need to select it in options. It's the same with an Xbox 360 controller-- it's still keyboard/mouse until you go under options and change it yourself.

EW is vanilla with all the extras. It's not likes it is a whole different story or anything. From what I ran into yeah I had to use a mouse and had to have EW.

Honestly once you have EW there is no reason to play EU again. The game breaking bug fixes along is only one of the reasons.

Agreed. I have both versions, Enemy Within is simply the game Enemy Unknown could have been with more time and money.

Well you guys convinced me, so I just picked up EW. :)

The windows tab is only for when I'm away from my PC, so I'll use a mouse or a GestureWorks profile if need be.

Thanks for the help ;)

One last question if anybody knows the answer - how big is the EW update? Not sure whether to hold it off so I can still game tonight.

If you buy it AFTER you launch the game, there's a chance you can still be allowed to play Enemy Unknown while it's downloading.

Enemy Unknown took about 9GB on my system, and both EU/EW's store pages recommend 20GB, so I'm guessing it's about 3-8GB. You can always play something else while you wait, like OpenXcom.
