It is fun.. It is a good tool to test things. It is very limited.
It's goood.
basically it is semi balanced by your skills, the squad you assemble and squad points.
you choose a predefined amount of points that each player has when assembling a squad. it can be 7500, 10000, 20000 or unlimited.
You then assemble a squad using any soldiers and/or aliens (except sectopods) within the point limit. Aliens and exalt cost a predefined amount of points and cannot be tweaked, while XCOM operatives have a certain amount of predefined class setups (you can't choose individual perks), each of which is specced for a certain playstyle and costs a different amount of points. Apart from that all weapons, armor, equipment (1 slot per unit) and gene mod setups cost additional points.
After long and careful squad assembly you enter the game and find out that your enemy has chitin plating so all your effort with steathily flanking with cloaked seekers was fruitless)
Overall it is MOSTLY balanced, but I've found Muton Elites to be a universal unit because grenades are the most reliable weapon in multi and they throw them really, really far. The one issue you'll encounter is client desync which means you and your opponent are bound to see different things on the map (intact cover vs destroyed cover, different positioning, LOS screwups etc), which is why MP cannot and shouldn't be taken seriously and is highly advised to play with a friend to avoid ragequits.
You're unlikely to find people looking for public games anyway.
