- Pop!OS 20.10 (a Ubuntu derivate)
- Arch: 64 Bit
- Processor : AMD Ryzen 5 5600X
- Ram : 64 GB
- Graphics Card: Nvidia 1050 Ti (4GB)
- Driver Nvidia 460 (propietary)
- X11 with Gnome 3.38
Initially I had the same, but installing "libSDL2_image" and some mesa packages "got me over this".
However I got the feeling that using a 64 Bit OS is not really appreciated by the game.
Note I got XCOM2 & CS:GO running on attempt #1
I learned that starting Steam using a terminal provides a lot of logs:

Some Logs
Given that pretty much all processors Intel / AMD produced for over 10 years are 64Bit processors ... it sounds like dated default assuming a 32-Bit Linux.
Note: in the logs provided /home/<username>/... is of course manually edited.
And yes I know ... I still haven't figured out why Vulkan does not start up properly.
In the meantime I got vulkan working according to vulkan-cube/vkcube & vulkaninfo
Also odd that steam.sh still complains:
As the NV 460 driver reports for Nvidia 1050 Ti on vulkaninfo:
will try with the LX-QT once and edit afterwards.
XCOM & LXQT -> Works
XCOM & Gnome 3 -> Does not work
Using "ubuntu/groovy" via Pop!OS. All packages up to date as of 2021-03-28
Gnome3 version :
LX QT version :
Maybe it works ?
You know it could be Gnome broke it ...

me too i refuse to mess up my system because of one broken game
because everything else works
Understandable, I guess? Though I wonder how well you can run support if the QA technicians don't have access to an OS that has been released a year ago...
in fact it worked here on my system until recently, so maybe Ubuntu will fix it.
At least steam no longer complains that some "VK_KHR_SURFACE" cannot be found.
Maybe your Distro is next ...
