Countries leaving the Council
I'm playing on Normal and I'm about halfway through the third month on my first playthrough. I'm on the verge of losing at least one country from the Council, and I don't have any satellites in reserve and I've already taken the alien base. Is there any other way to reduce panic? Is it normal for countries to start leaving the council this soon? Am I on the verge of losing the game?

So far I'm really enjoying the ground combat in the game. But I'm finding the base management, technology tree and "diplomacy" somewhat frustrating.

you can lose 8 countries before losing the game, note the doom ticker. manage your abduction panick better. use sats.

sats over a country means no more abductions in that country next month (missions get assigned at month start). sats over a continent means no more abductions in that continent means no more panic in that area.

It's common to lose a few contries early on your first playthrough. Try to focus on your economy early on. Do not make useless expenses. Try to save as much money as you can and invest on building sats and sat nexus. Once you get a decent cash flow , then you can start buying items and such. That's my recomendation.

I think the game forgot to tell you, but the POINT of satellight is COVERAGE. when you cover something you are protecting something, nations want coverage because it stops abductions yes.

Don't worry about losing a country to panic. Unfortunately to answer your question, there is no way to curb panic unless the aliens send a mission there that you can fulfill. One country leaving is not that dangerous, just try to focus production on getting satellite coverage up for the next months and you should be fine. By the mid/end game you should be swimming in credits so the loss of funding in the end should be minimal. Worst comes to worst don't sweat restarting the play through. Everyone I know has lost their first play through including myself, so don't worry about it.

Prioritize retaining continents rather than specific countries. It's better to lose 4 countries but keep 4 continents, than to keep 14 countries at the expense of losing 2 continents.

It's possible to play a game in which you lose no countries, but it takes a little bit of luck when it comes to where those first abduction and terror sites hit. If you can get at least 3 satellites up on the last day of each month starting with Februrary, you'll be on a good pace for ample coverage quickly.

if you dont want to lose any countries, you need to get a link or sattelite nexus up every month and at the very end of the month put the sattelites on countries that are in panic and the rest over other countries.

a sattelite will reduce panic so you never lose a country that is in panic when you put a sattelite there before the month ends.

this is a bit of a puzzle game because you need certain base energy etc per month.
Im glad the 2nd game isnt that strict with its buildorder.

Well, I got lucky. I successfully repulsed a terror incursion in Germany, which reduced panic in Russia to 4. Not sure how long I'll be able to hold onto it. I've got money problems, and I didn't build one of satellite uplinks next to the others.

I lost 2 countries in I think the 3rd month, and they were almost all in danger. But I was able to reduce panic since then through choosing locations for special missions and putting up satellites. I'm now about to start August and only have 2 withdrawn countries and 2 at a level 3 panic. I'm playing my first playthrough on the Classic difficulty setting, since I have experience with the first X-Com game, which was pretty brutal!

But my main point is that it's ok to lose some countries. You'll most likely recover nicely.

Too bad you can't have a country recover themselves them from panic as they reluctantly drag themselves across the floor and admit that you were right all along as you sit all smug at the commander's chair with your arms crossed. XD

haha, I've thought about that too. There's a mod out there which allows you to get them back after a big base attack in those countries. But I'm playing the original game, no mods, at least for this playthrough. Next I plan to buy XCOM Enemy Within, and then XCOM 2. I'm hoping for some big discounts during the annual summer sale.

Yep, my brother gave me Xcom 2 as birthday present so I've been trying to finish off the original game. I tried playing the first couple of missions in Xcom 2, and found them to be much tougher than the first few missions in Xcom 1.

Update: Its now August, and I've just lost Egypt, but that's the only one so far. I've got 3 satellites in the pipeline, so hopefully I can keep panic under control. But I just found the "Ethereal Device", and it looks like things are going to get much tougher.

too late
already figured out almost everything by trial and error
dropping to normal reloading saves helps too

Remember too that if your in a pinch for money you can always sell corpses and alloys and such to the grey market. I find it better to sometimes do this to get a satelite up over an "in danger of losing" country to ensure that it reduces panic and then increases my monthly income.
