Enemy Within suddenly won't launch
I was playing Enemy Within for a couple of hours now and up to this point it was working fine. Then all of a sudden it won't boot - after clicking on the Enemy Within option in the launcher it simply tries to launch the game and then goes back to the launcher.

I've tried the following solutions found in other topics:
- verifying the game files;
- reinstalling the game;
- changing the language;
- deleting the binaries folders;
- update'ing my drivers;
- running the game as administrator;
- running the game in compatibility mode;

So far, nothing. It woudln't be so mind boggling if Enemy Unknown wouldn't work too, but it does. Also, I've just played EW perfectly fine a couple of hours ago. Thanks in advance for any help.

I've actually found a solution (or rather sort of). In my case it was a matter of the authentication token during the launching of the game - at first I was playing it on a shared library (same PC). Them I've bought the license key myself which triggered the problem - during launch EW displayed 'authentication token' and then it was going back to the launcher. For some reason, EW would not show up on my DLC list in the Steam app (but it did on my account). After trying every possible solution, I've deleted the game from my account and voila! When using it back via a shared library it worked again perfectly. Very weird and I'm unable to specify the exact problem, but it seems to be tied to some weird localization issue of the EW DLC.

When this happened to me I had to go into the Appdata folder and rename the XEW folder t0 XCom-Enemy-Unknown It lets me play the base game but I can't access the dlc

Looked over other feeds and find someone point out that Gnome Shell could be related to the issue, I've just installed lxde desktop to try and it's magic the game launch again so it seems related to the desktop environment you run the game through. (And yes it's sad to have to install another desktop environment to play a game)

From my testing it is solely enemy within doing it. Just uninstall it and it will be fine. Apparently it hates windows 10. That is probably why that desktop thing works. Installing it on my old windows 7 laptop shows no issue either

Oh windows 7, how I miss thee. Sometimes I think reverting back would still be worth all the viruses I would get lol.

OK so im not the only one going nuts from this. but for real can SOMEONE who runs steam PLEASE fix this problem so we can enjoy the Xcom dlc without wasting our money!?

It isn't steams fault. It would be the developers who have no reason to fix it anymore. Most steam could do is probably put a warning. Look at vampire, the masquerade fans had to make a patch in order for it to work.
