Yes, it is still good. The AI has a few exploits that were fixed in the DLC, but it should take you multiple replays to learn them.

EW cures numerous bug fixes that makes the game far more enjoyable.

for the bug fixes. I would not suggest anyone plays the EU version when EW is available.

It's perfectly (any bugs aside) playable without the DLC.

EW adds a lot of stuff to the game, which is good.
But.
EW adds a lot of stuff to the game, which if you havn't played it before might confuse the hell out of you as you try to figure out what it all is.

The Elite Soldier Pack just adds a bunch of ways to customize how your troops look, before they go off and die. If it's going cheap I'd say to get it anyway, otherwise only get it if customizing how your troops look is something you find fun. Well...That, or you just want to put everyone in pink armor.

The Slingshot Pack is three missions with a little story tying them together. It's a fun little challenge with some fun rewards for doing it, but not essential to play (or beat) the game.

I played EU on the ps3 a few years ago and enjoyed it a lot. I just bought the xcom complete pack which includes EW for $10 so I would suggest getting it if you got the cash and you enjoy these types of games.

I just checked and it's on sale until the 12th.

you can play EU without EW but imo EU is just an average game while EW is an awesome game

EW adds several new mechanics to the game

yeah I played EU and forgot to play EW until months later when I remembered I had actually purchased the DLC. Then it was like wow whole new game!

So yes it is worth it, I didn't notice missing anything playing it the first time. I believe the DLC is worth it, but it isn't absolutely required.

Minority view: I prefer the game WITHOUT the DLC. The DLC did not enhance the game, just provided more abilities to your soldiers, reducing the difference between "us" and "them" (since we can now replicate just about everything they do) and cluttering your mission with tons of gimics, many of which are essentially pointless. It also made the game substantially easier, as the aliens only get a couple of new options (one of which actually makes the game easier FOR YOU; the stealth aliens are WAY more manageable than Thin-Men) and they also have reduced numbers early game (increased by late game, but by then it doesn't matter anyway).

Overwhelming opinion favors the DLC, however. So while the base game is definitely worth it, you'll probably like to have the DLC at some point.

Imo, if you can afford the slightly more costly price of
http://store.steampowered.com/sub/37431/
with the dlcs, and if achievements completion is something you do not mind doing, or something you must complete, then it is better to get the pack with the dlcs. Because without the dlcs you will never get 100%, and the dlcs pack will cost you about the same price as the base game, instead of around 2 more dollars with the complete pack.

Don't make the mistake of getting +The Bureau: XCOM Declassified pack like I did, even if it costs the same, or costs one more dollar. Imo, it is not worth it even if it comes free with the base game, since the oppertunity cost will be not being able to get the complete dlc pack.

it adds several special missions also
and even if seekers are not so strong as thin men (in vanilla) they are very fun cause they don't just shot at you like every alien in the game
and even if it makes the game easier you can jsut increase the difficulty XD

i just want to point out that fun =/= difficulty and that new mechanics are always worth it as long as their are fun in my opinion
