Edit: I used FOUR interceptors with Plasma Cannons, with Aim boosts (two with Tracking boosts) and got no less than 12 hits and couldn't take it down. I can't play a game if it's just going to ♥♥♥♥ me over like this.
The air combat is simply the weakest part of this game. If you have a fighter you can get by, to a point. That point largely being anything more powerful than an abductor or maybe a supply barge with some luck.
If you have Firestorms, more often than not you win. If you have them with at least EMP if not plasma, then you just win. Most, not all but it's close, of the challenge if air combat goes away with them.
Right, and it's so incredibly ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ expensive to research everything, that it takes several fights to make enough resources for ONE thing. I finally got my Firestorm research done, and it'll take 13 turns for them to arrive, the month AFTER the purple ship shows up. Doesn't much help my score when the purple ship arrives twice in one month and being entirely unable to affect it because I'm not getting ANY resources from the fights. Even if I choose the "very difficult" fights. I've got nothing less than an A on every review, and have not once lost a soldier (though there were some close calls) and got nothing less than excellent on every single mission. Until now, where this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ship brings my score down to a C.
I did that a lot, even on the highest difficulty. I do damage and before the fighter is downed I retreat via the button so my fighter is not lost. Immediately send the next intercepter in to finish the job.
With the standard Avalanche it is not possible to down later UFOs, you need at least a decent weapon upgrade to actually deal enough damage for the swarm tactic.
