[LW] First ufo
So I found my first ufo playing Long War today. Been a long time since I played the base game but I remember f the first one was super easy.

This one damaged 2 of my jets and fully downed one before floating away like nothing happened. Is that normal?

did you attack something bigger than a scout? then yes.

Firestorms are your only hope of taking down big UFO's and in the Long War I think its randomized what your up against

First one should be a scout. Looked like it anyway. Guess I just rolled bad.

Nope not in LW. In LW you can get the big ships pretty much off the bat.

Its part of the experience of carefully picking and choosing not only your ground engagements but also the air combats.

But yes don't really expect to shoot down too many of the UFO's. Really just focus on dealing to the Hunter ones until you get Firestorms up and running.

I'm pretty sure things are set in stone for the first month: nothing bigger than a scout should hunt your sat and every downed UFOs result in a crash mission.

I'd suggest to be ready to disengage your interceptor as soon as it has lost 50% HP (or even before later against bigger targets).
Depending of your starting country and the spawn point of the UFO you may be limited to one engagement but it's still better to abort than losing an interceptor (and it's not a complete loss as aliens have to pay to repair their UFOs).

Long War was not make to be fair. It was made by people that thought impossible difficulty was to easy.

Welcome to the deep end. Cement shoes are provided free and, unlike the vanilla, without option.

Nope, turns out it was the LUCKIEST scout alive. Took 1 Inty down and 2 were left limping.
Now in month 2 and already got a medium hovering over Europe. That bugger can stay there.

ADDENDUM: So some (bloody most) of my rookies have a negative armour stat. I'm assuming that's Damage Reduction, and if so I'm guessing it's a miracle I managed to rank up a rookie with -4 DR.

WHY ARE THERE SO MANY -4 DR's?
Ashardalon Jun 12, 2019 @ 7:59am
no armor stat isnt damage reduction
its defense
its a minor debuff to cover
its pretty common
if you have someone with 5defense you both have the most survivable tank and someone that will never get shot at because your other units have worse cover in the same cover and aliens shoot the easiest target

there is only a few ways to get damage reduction in the game
some perks and -0/1 when in cover
no units have innate damage reduction

Soldiers with low defense (and heavy armor) are excellent baits.

damage reduction is something the enemy has.

make chem grenades. and labs.

those are things you need in long war.

well you don't need them if you are doing a youtube playthru and want to have a bad time for better views. but if you want to get ahead you need labs and chem grenades.

Dude i'm pulling 70+hr weeks on nightshifts. I've barely had the time to get into it yet. Still waiting to be able to start the Alien Confinement room.

But yes, I'll be going for chem grenades when I can. It's just gonna take a while.

EDIT: Does all the enemies have a 90% crit rate or somthing?

Crit chance is increased by 50% (100% with a second wave option) against flanked targets.
If you're noticing a lot of crits without being flanked it's either your brain lying to you (which is normal: the human brain acts that way) or you've been against aliens with perks like Executioner or Aggression).

Also turns out I was running on classic not normal. Oops.

Difficulty of long war can be adjusted. the quickest way is the AI research rate.

Enemies have a crit rate well you got to look into the ini, it increases over time depending on the stage of alien research.

the BOSS units the pod leader types get absurd stats. ABSURD stats.

Wouldn't be surprised if they have 100% crit rate with opportunist against a flanked overwatch shot.

but the general units aren't as bad.

its just bosses. and the EXALT bosses look just like regular units except pop, 20-30 points of damage on your team. so you gotta be REAL careful of bosses.

Unless it's basic exalt. then they just fall over before you start shooting them
