Any ideas on how to get Van Doorn back alive without losing anyone? Squad makeup? Tactics?

just try and leave your troops in spots that can shoot the thin men when they land, that's pretty much it, or a scout to run the overwatch so you can get close etc, i normally have a snipe or two to get them

As I say in every council mission thread. Go slow, kill each pod drop before moving ahead. Don't double move the VIP until you know the map. The thin men always drop in the same spot so easy to predict after the first time.

As a new player overwatch crawl is highly recommended

Current squad:

Scout (Laser Rifle)
Infantry (Laser Rifle; High mobility)
Medic (Laser Rifle; 13 mobility, High aim)
Engineer (Laser Rifle; High mobility)
Gunner (SAW; Decent mobility; High aim)
Sniper (Marksman Rifle)

I was able to get Van Doorn Successfully, but then he got flanked on the way to the EZ and, well, he's not wearing any armor.

Just a question you have already laserweapons(so you are probably at the of april at the least), why are you only still using 6 soldiers?
By the end of april you should be able to have your 7th soldier activated in the officers school.
As for the mission there are always four pods in a counsil mission and then the drop ins.
I DONT free van doorn before all the four pods are defeated, afterwards(there are no turn timers so take your time) its a matter of positioning your men on positions where they can overwatch the drop ins and if necessary take them out.
For that reason i always bring an assault(run and gun can save the day)
Even if the last pod is on the high ground behind van Doorns car(i use battlescanner and then a sniper to activate and eliminate them) i never activate(step next to him) van doorn before the last pod is eliminated.

the mints only drop when van doorn gets closer to the evac, so you can take it slow fight every mint 6v1

I am about to finish June, I think. I am still using 6 soliers because everything is so bloody expensive and I haven't gotten to it on the priority list yet. I haven't even been able to get more than one satellite in the air, yet, because everytime my second one is almost finished, my first gets shot out of the sky.

I didn't know about the four pod rule, though. Good to know.

I was able to get him with that squad. Liberal use of overwatch and making sure everyone was reloaded before I went up to get Van Doorn.

Van Doorn and Friendly were assigned Gunner/Rocketeer and Medic/Engineer, respectively. I think I may have already made Friendly an engineer, but I haven't decide what to do with Van Doorn, yet.

Well good for you it worked out.
Make the officers school a priority, the missions will get harder and harder. The aliens will get way more hp in the coming months , you really should make sure to have your 8th soldier available at the end of july preferably sooner.
Not to mention the officers can really make a difference.
As for Van Doorn i Have always made him a gunner, cant even imagine him not being 1 lol.
I think his 13 mobility makes him not my first choice for a rocketeer, not to mention that with the new enemies soon entering the conflict(Cyberdisc, mecs for example) you can never have enough gunners.

Good luck commander.

My game is rather old, so I am probably out of the loop. When did it become possible to add a seventh soldier? My squads start at 4 amd max out at 6. And Van Doom for me is just a regular mission VIP.

Is there some DLC I need to get?

I hadn't played X-Com in a few years, so this mod was new to me. Looks nice; I downloaded it and started a game. X-com had been getting a bit stale, but the Aliens are now an actual threat.

I had been playing Xenonauts as a substitute, since it had more varied combats, including a more complicated air combat. Looks like NexusMods incorporated a lot of that into the Long War. Cool beans.

Nexus also made a mod for Xenonauts itself (as well as what looks like half the strategy games in existence!). I'll have to check that out also.

Thanks for the heads up!

Nexus is just a hosting location you will find mods for all sorts of games there. The people who made Long War is now called Pavonis Studio.
