Far Cry 2

Far Cry 2

Why doesn't the Steam version have achievements?
Edit: now that they added achievements for all far cry’s except 1 & 2, it’s safe to say it’s never gonna happen.

Part of me thinks one of the reasons is because this game is from a completely different era, the game wouldn’t see the light of day if it was set to release in the recent years, especially being a Ubisoft game.

The game is 15 years old. But setting that aside, Ubisoft has never implemented steam achievements on any of its games. It wouldn't make sense today anyway since (for games released in the last 10 years or so) you still need to launch the game via their launcher which has achievements.

GTA IV (2008) used to not have achievements on Steam until very recently (like 1~2 years ago), and it also requires a 3rd party launcher. so it does make sense to implement them now, but it's up to ubi.

Ubi dropped all support for this game many years ago after releasing their "Final Update"
which was seriously flawed. - There's absolutely no chance after all this time that they'd
consider investing resources to correct their update, let alone make any improvements.

Best to create your own challenges and 'personal best' achievements. - The real 'rewards'
are found in the game play itself.

That's very sad to know that one of the BEST entry of the franchise is neglected.

Indeed. The games enduring popularity competes and is a testament to the ill path they
have chosen since. - A living embarrassment that none of their showy titles can match
in 15 years of production, and would likely prefer it if the game faded into obscurity, or
never existed at all.

They broadened their market but sacrificed maturity, as the titles since have proven.
Each one an exploitative cookie-cutter of the last. - All show and no go.

Their colorful raucous thrills are nothing compared to FC2's calm intensity.

Thankfully - Quality Endures -

Well said bro. it is truly the best Far Cry so far.

I made this post on reddit explaining why it's the best of the series:

No PC version of the game had achievements. This is from an era where the only PC games that really had that were Windows Live games that were integrated with XBL.

It's a GOOD thing that FC2 isn't one of those games, because with that "feature" usually came terrible DRM. GTAiV was always a windows Live game, and it had achievements from day one on that service.

If you need gold stars, just consult the in game stats.

Great - 8 ) Especially about fast travel !

- I gave up using the bus years ago and only used it again when playtesting for modders in production. For one it breaks the immersion, but it also robs you of a large portion of
the adventure which in FC2 is just getting from here to there.

I've had the most unusual thrills and gained the most vital info by always taking the
scenic routes that expose all the maps nuances that over time make travel as automatic
and natural as touring the neighborhood you grew up in. Now I can play for days and
days without consulting the map at all.

About a remake - There has certainly been a mass of discussion on the subject in all
FC2 forums. We know it won't be Ubi unless they wise up and surprise us with a 20
or 25th year 'Anniversary Edition'. - Well, the way they've been going we hope that
never happens, they're guaranteed to screw it up.

What we can hope for is that a much needed genre will emerge by a different outfit
dedicated to a realistic mercenary experience - or as FC2's 'Agent Among Mercs'
adventure. - It's too obvious to be overlooked, has too much potential to be ignored.

Let's also hope that whoever commits to the production will also commit to the same
freedom and uncluttered uninterrupted no BS and save anywhere immersion that made
FC2 the shining example of a truly pure FPS adventure.

(I would have liked to have responded in redit but I won't sign on because of their info
sharing policy.)

- Thanks again - for another great feed ! 8 )

Excellent points ! - Many "awards" are for just stumbling on an object or opening a door.
"You've met a key character - Congratulations !" - It's usually pretty embarrassing. (ala
Mafia 3)

The primary stats in FC2 that I pay attention to are Weapons used, Upgrades purchased,
Bullets Fired (the less used the more valuable the stats) and Bullet Hit percentage which
I try to maintain well above 70%.

Personal stats are more vague as in Game Days / Hours Played, and stealth utilized.
Rushing through the game is a nono, it just lessens the adventure. Players should
always take their time as there are never time limits imposed by the game, but
getting in and out of a crowded base in a short time undetected counts for major
points. - Using a machete only to clear a checkpoint without taking critical damage
is another.

The less you need and the less you use accomplishing any task elevates your
achievement level and for a true reference - keeping a daily log is a good way
to review and rate your own achievements.

[EDIT] - If you haven't checked out the guide yet you'll find my 'Current Stats'
for an example of what I'm talking about:

Since the upplay version doesn't have any achievements, it probably never happens.

sad
I wonder how much better gaming would be if people cared less about meaningless nonsense like achievements and instead cared more about the quality of content being played.
