Can umodded players join modded servers?
If I want to get a few minimal QOL mods, does that mean I can't get random joiners?

Yes, if someone is running mods that don't modify the lobby.
No, if someone is running mods that modify the lobby. [8+ Players etc.]

There are certain mods that only the host needs to have and there are certain mods that a client can have even if the host/other players don't.
Host can use mods like the one that prevents spiders from spawning or changes the number of days on the quota etc
Client can use ones like the minimap, ship scan, probably F for flashlight mod etc.

I tried to use a mod that technically modifies the lobby (Its supposed to let people join inbetween moons instead of only at the start), and unmodded players were able to join, but it also immediately broke the game after the first moon by softlocking us and I had to remoe it.

If it’s purely cosmetic then yes, but if it makes your hit box smaller or something then no

mods works 100% with unmodded lobbys. One way to spot a modder fast is if loot someone picks up stays on the det floor and you cant pick it up. If that happens then they use inventory mod etc. But it doesnt crash.

is there a way for one to have a modded version of a game separate from the vanilla game? Like 2 games on 1 pc, 1 modded and 1 unmodded that i can easily switch between because i dont want to go into my files and move everything thats modded to a different area, and redoing all that if i want mods

If you use the Thunderstore mod manager then yes, it has an option to launch with mods or without them without having to do anything else.

How can you tell which mods are client and which mods are server? Trying to run a few mods with my friends and can't figure it out!

If you don't already have a good understanding of mods and how they work then the only way is to search specifically for the client-side tag on thunderstore, but not all mods are tagged correctly.

The safest way to use mods with a group is just make sure everyone is using the same mods.
Is team viewer required in any way to play with others?

No, why would it be? It’s a multiplayer game.
