the first boss is glaringly bad design
this is a super wtf boss compared to previous armored core or even souls games. Up until the boss you literally don't have to use a single mechanic introduced in this game, so the importance of them is lost on someone who played previous AC games like me.

it is almost always above your head when you're in full lock on range. I did not use the blade my first 5 attempts because I thought it wasn't needed, turns out, you aint gonna stagger the boss without it. given the extremely small arena...that the boss is not also bound by, the boss is out of range of blade attacks 50% of the time. After looking up that I SHOULD be using the blade, the boss just started flying outside of overboost and hover range.

Why is this the first mandatory encounter? why not another ground based machine? It's very odd

The only thing wrong with the first boss is the arena size is too small, and it can kite you outside the boundary. Welcome to shock therapy in AC6, you'll get used to it, as long as you persevere. Don't worry, the game eases up after the boss.

The dev team is trusting you to figure out how to beat it. Pro-tip: Use your assault boost to build extra stagger damage. Shoot at it as you fly in, then hit with the sword. Stay under the boss if you need to. Good luck, pilot :)

is there any way to tell when this boss is going to move, it has literally just moved out of the way every single time i boost over to it. so ive just been not boosting to be able to dodge

Some people question the pacing as the learning curve is not the same for everyone. I was like you and said "sword? ♥♥♥♥ sword" melee is the strongest it has ever been in AC. I didn't get a handle on the game until after the chapter 1 boss.

Just keep trying at the very least you are getting the hang of it.

It follows a loose pattern, and it's also affected by your positioning. Observe it closely and see how it responds to your position. For example, if you stay too close to it for too long, it will rush away. If you stay far away, it will hang out and shoot missiles. I found that it was easier to counter-attack after it fires missiles from it's underside, indicated by the red square warning label and the alarm tone. After you hear the tone, jump up or use cover to avoid the missiles, charge at the boss with assault boost, shoot it along the way with both your guns, then finish with sword. This strat requires about a medium sized distance from the boss to work.

Like in every fromsoftware game....the boss is just teaching you how to play the game, how you should use your boosts, melee weapons and use the environment

the devs are trying to get you off the ground

what do you mean you play the previous armored Core games?
when spending as much time in the air was literally required for those older ones

I thought this was another post whining about Balteus, but it looks like it's actually a post whining about the tutorial boss of all things. Awkward.
geez, according to the threads everything is just bad design. sure. the game has flaws. still playable.
No shot we're actually talking about the TUTORIAL HELICOPTER right? Surely we aren't talking about the boss that dies when you so much as wiggle the pulse blade within 10 feet of its general direction.

like i said, i didnt use the pulse blade for like 10 attempts, because i didnt have to use the pulse blade the entire rest of the level. it'd be like suddenly being expected to use focus points in dark souls without ever needing to before.

Tutorial boss became a problem, now this game is crap. That's funny.

Honestly, it would be totally different if they encouraged you saying "get close and attack it" or something along with staying off the ground to avoid AOE. Would be even better if they did not nerf the damage your weapons did to it as well.

skill issue for not using one of your only resources available.

Yeah the first few bosses in this game are bad for new players. I wish the first mission was setup to help you learn the mechanics with stronger enemies and making you use the different tactics. You only learn about the stagger system AFTER this mission lol.
