That gate you're talking about contains the final sidequest necessary to unlock True Neutral ending. So if you're aiming for this one, you must complete said sidequest before making a choice.
And yes, you can tie up all your loose ends after the choice - there's a small dungeon before you confront the final boss.
EDIT: Note that if you're going for superbosses later, it's simply more efficient to get the Chaos ending first IF your alignment is Chaos as well. You said you're spoiler free so I won't say the reason unless you ask me OP.
