An excellent game with challenging combat, beautiful magical moves, and cinematic flair. I find it tougher than Persona, and there’s definitely grinding especially in the final chapter.

As someone who hasn't played the original and did canon of vengeance...
The game is quite a slog in the first two areas in terms of the gameplay; a vast majority of the bosses having weaknesses does make them feel a bit repetitive especially in the early game.
I think the power of the companion characters is a bit excessive when they start getting ma-buff and debuff skills, and the access of skills they get. I think the game gets more fun they are removed and you get to use your demons more. I ran a magic build on hard and I think it felt fairly strong.

The story is awful, I am surprised that the original is worse somehow, but it happens I guess.

I wish there were more dungeons akin to the stuff you would see in Strange Journey.

Once the game gets to the third area it's good, but I think the first two areas being a slog and the story sucking is a big deterrent.

I think the later game bosses can be pretty fun, I have beaten one super boss, shiva is pretty fun. it was fun. I need to do the three others, might take awhile on that.

Good game if you chug through the first two areas and ignore the story, but I don't think its so insanely good that makes the tedious first two areas (and depending on the person the story sucking) something everyone would want to lock in on.
