For most games, you don't need to play the previous games to understand the story as they are standalones.

Each Shin Megami Tensei and their Spinoffs have their own stories and you do not need to know the story, only one where this doesn't count is for SMT4 and SMT4 Apocalypse as they're one story more or less.

3 is somewhat a sequel to this game.

On the contrary, it's a prequel for many reasons, first and foremost because you can beat the main character of SMT 3 after he attained his might in the ending of SMT 3 in SMT V, but also because it's implied frequently in SMT V if you talk to various NPC in the overworld map.

Don't click if you want to be spoilered. You've been warned.

Personally, I think SMT V's world is an alternative reality created by Demifiend (MC of Nocturne), a second conception with another idea of creation instead of living in a small, twisted reality sphere.

Nah it isn't related like that, it's different timelines sadly. Koshimizu says outright the event (another Conception) happened in Chiyoda (Nocturne is Shinuku) and the demons in Da'at are referring to that. The Demi-fiend makes it weird and deliberately confusing though, so I can see why everyone thinks they're directly linked. Especially the second reality stuff, I thought the exact same theory for ages on release lol.

@OP - only SMT 2 explicitly follows the plot of one ending from 1 and the IV duology represent two-thirds of the same wider story. They all take place in one universe and share some significant events, but if you're new you can assume they're all different and you won't miss anything. The most direct links are usually like, one character might be a reincarnation of a previous one, or an item/location will be used in the same way. Like Zelda or something.

DF is going from one universe to the other to kill gods like how it explained in TDE, but I'm not sure, that's how I interpret it.

I think that 5 is more a sequel to 3 with the world destroyed route. There are some things in the game (5) that do feel familiar if you played 3.

it's just 5 wanting to copy 3's success, that's why 5 sometimes felt that it don't have its own identity and just trying too hard to become 3

No that's not what I mean and that's not even true. There are serious parts in 5 that fits in 3s story soo much that I wonder if it's actually a sequel, but as Atlus is kinda tightlipped if you want to ask something, we'll never know.

no need. even tho SMT3 is prequel of SMT5
you could just check google or youtube for explanation

No, most games are standalone.
The "V is a sequel to III" thing is a headcanon, there are references but they're too loosely connected to draw a continuity, u don't need to worry bout that.
