Here's the steps to paint items (Only Works with paintable items. Non-Paintable Hats don't work.)
_______________________________________________________________________________
Step 1.) Load The Paintable Hat/Misc.
Step 2.) Right Click the model name and load the rig "hat_color_script"
Step 3.) The Item should be black by now. Right-Click the item again and roll over Show in Element Viewer > Model
Step 4.) Scroll through the attributes until you find materials (which should have at least 1 item in it.
Step 5.) Go into "color" (or whatever has three zeros next to it) and type in the color codes for the paint you want, which can be found in the link below:

And you're done! :)
Glad I could help out

The Summer items currently aren't paintable at the moment. Neither are the Robotic Boogaloo items. You may need to check out Pte Jack's tutorial on that.
Then he must've either attempted to load the hat script or followed Pte Jack's tutorial and simply left it black
Once that is complete you should be able to either edit the vmt or use the colour scripts...

Just add override materials, and in the element viewer, add an attribute of type color called $colortint_tmp to the proper material(s). You end up with a fancy colour picker, along with the satisfaction of having made it happen yourself like a big boy ;P
Just right click the model's animation set > add override materials. Then just show the model in the element viewer, expand its materials, and there should be a colour picker by colortint_base.
