Bullet tracers
How do I add bullet tracers? Not a physical bullet model that is moved, but instead the little bullet "lines" you see when you shoot in TF2. I tried particles, but it didn't work and nothing showed. It's for a scattergun.

Particles are indeed the right place to look for this, but they can sometimes be a bit fiddly in the manner they appear. Usually, when I add one, it doesn't appear in the view until I've scrubbed the viewer back a bit, to play from before its start point. It might also not appear in the exact position you've placed it in the world.

import particle system bullet_tracer01 from tf/particles/bullet_tracers.pcf. Place it where you want the bullet tracer to start, and place its controlPoint1 joint behind the point of impact (or directly at the point of impact if the camera can see behind it. The reason for that is that the tracer disappears the moment it hits the control point, so to give it better visibility, I prefer to place it further behind the target whenever possible). Move the playhead off of the active shot and back in again to refresh the particles (has to be done for all particle systems in case you didn't know).

I don't find it finicky at all, the tracers always appear exactly where I want them to.

5 years dead thread, next time look at the last post. Though since this is relatable, I’ll let it slide.

This one is easy to use if you don’t want to use particles.
