Thanks again to everyone continuing to play Aether & Iron and share feedback. This update introduces a new way to play for those who want higher stakes, alongside a range of accessibility options, UI improvements, and new sound effects.

We’ve also addressed a few lingering issues around achievements, dialogue flow, and item rewards.

Patch Notes

New

Enabled the “Single Save” modifier for campaigns, if you want to play with only a single save. No save scumming!
Added a new option to the settings to enable/disable opaque roads during combat, which helps to reduce motion.

Improved

Narrative & Scenes

Added new emotes and reactions to conversations in the Root Cellar.
Added alarm sound effects when escaping The Tomb.
Added new sound effects when speaking to Popper.
Added new sound effects when speaking to Banger.
Added a pause when playing silent dialogue lines during autoplay so it doesn’t immediately skip to the next line.
Improved the quality of the safehouse environment when playing on “Low” graphics settings.

UI/UX

Made it harder to delete your campaigns. The “Delete” button has been removed, and a campaign will automatically delete itself when you delete all save files within it.
Conversations now pause when receiving items and when morale changes, so there’s time to view notifications in the conversation history.
Added a warning pop-up when trying to save and out of disk space.

Misc

Improved the starting loadout of Benny’s vehicle.

Fixed issue where available combat actions were updating slightly later than when a new turn starts.

Fixed dialogue flow issue when inspecting Mr Blanc’s files in the Hidden Room.

Thanks again to everyone who’s been playing Aether & Iron and continuing to share feedback with us. We’ve been working through some player-reported issues - particularly around progression and UX clarity - and have our latest patch ready to share.

This update focuses on fixing several cases where players could get stuck when migrating from the demo to the full game, improving combat responsiveness, and tightening up UI clarity and a few localisation issues. There are also a handful of quality-of-life improvements based directly on community feedback.

We’ll keep the updates coming as we continue improving the game.

Mass Repair now requires that you confirm your target before it activates (like most other combat actions).

In-game optimization

I periodically encounter micro-freezes in the game. This is especially noticeable during road battles. Has anyone else encountered this? Is this poor optimization, or is it just me?

Combat Bug?

An unplanned stop- Nations Crusade Fight against the blackhats start. Its Gias turn but cant do anything. cant do any actions or even skip turn nothing. Hope theres a fix cause this breaks my playthrough obviously cant progress. Tried reloading same banana....

Why can't I buy this vehicle part?

I am in a garage. It sells, among other things, an "efficient repulsor". I want it, it costs 30, which I have no problem paying, but "buy item" is greyed out when I try to buy it. Why? I could buy everything else from the shop with no problem.

I hope this game gets the recognition it deserves, for it is great and has the potential to be truly excellent, if the minor bugs (dialogue boxes closing, characters unable to be talked to under some circumstances) and UI nuisances (items being "in reserve" rather than "equipped" when they're actually equipped), are taken care of.

The story is really good, with easter eggs and references that are more subtle than many games of the genre and don't try to be shoved in your face. If you get them, you enjoy them, and if you don't, it ruins nothing for they're simply that, references. The fighting gameplay is quite interesting too, with some difficulty spikes here and there but nothing insurmontable.

The ambiance of "film noir" is really well done too, both aesthetically and musically speaking. But what makes for the game's greatest strength is, to me, the main character.

More often than not, the main character of such narrative games is either defined by the player, or ends up being secondary to the companions around them who are fleshed out to be interesting to have around, to the detriment of the one they're accompanying. Many stories suffer from this pitfall and end up having us like the companions but hoping the main character would simply make way for...another companion, let's say.

Gia Randazzo and her nemesis aren't like that at all. They're fleshed out, interesting in their own rights, their character design is amazing, and the player's input makes them better, not a bland window through which we access the world. It's been a real pleasure going through their story, and you can feel the devs' love for both the protagonist and the antagonist.

Hats off to greatness.

Advertised as a car combat RPG inspired by Disco Elysium, the first thing we have to mention is that if you are buying this for the car combat you have been scammed. There are only roughly twenty fights in the entire 35~ hour game and most of them are as simple as just clicking on bad guys to beat them. There are no random encounters and there are no ways to have extra fights (The game pretends there are random encounters, but they are all hardcoded to happen at specific moments.) and if you play on "Normal" difficulty the entire game is easy but the final boss is so difficult you can't beat him without a specific combo.

99% of the runtime is a Disco Elysium style visual novel where you periodically make skill checks in order to advance the story. Every beat is extremely linear, you can only choose the order of the content.

You are Gia "Generic Italian" Randazzo in a post apocalyptic new york where there is no official government; for a reason the game never points out the US government was completely replaced with "Barons", crime lords that rule sections of the city with an iron fist. Barons are completely above any and all concept of law and are expected to torture/exploit the people in their barony; Gia has previously killed Barons and as a result she is treated like the worst kind of scum in the city. Something this game is obsessed with is looking you in the eye and saying "You are scum because rich people think you are scum" and using that as the perpetual reason why you can't have nice things.

We spend almost the entire game focusing on a central theme: Somebody rich has decided you suck. The engineers that keep the cities floating are paradoxically treated like slaves, gangsters control pretty much every element of "polite society", and as I mentioned people treat Gia like a criminal because she killed a tyrant that murdered her friends. Again, CRIME LORDS CALLED BARONS RULE THE CITY WITH AN IRON FIST; AND THE GAME IS HYPER FIXATED ON SAYING IT'S BECAUSE WE'RE POOR.

Something I cannot help but focus is that New York in this game is the Republican dream of a perfect small government. There is absolutely no greater nation, the USA starts and stop with New York, and nobody is even the mayor or leader of New York. As a result, unless you are one of the rich barons at the top you are basically relegated to picking through the filth of the lower districts and serving your baron without question. This apocalyptic version of New York is a cesspool of crime that is quite litterally days away from being ripped apart by the world around it. Because big shocker, when your entire country is divided up among crime lords nobody wants to lift a finger to help anybody else.

I wanted to like this game but between the total lack of combat in this car combat RPG and the extremely nonsensical story I am just lost. By the time I got to the final fight, learned it was impossible, and realized the entire story could of been told in three sentences, I was done.

Here is the story of Aether & Iron: The Illuminati wants to destroy the city because reasons, you get caught up in their plan, you stop the plan at the end. Roll credits.

An excellent 8/10 I happily recommend. It knows what it wants to be and accomplishes it very well. The atmosphere is filled with music, and art that draws you in to every scene. The writing is a treat to listen to as slang from a bygone era is tossed around like dice in a backalley casino. The characters are all likeable and really embody their archetypes in all the best ways. Any fan of noir, as a genre, will want to play this.

There are a few blemishes that are easy enough to look over, but can be annoying or disorienting. For example; the menus in the garage section are cumbersome to move through and often don't track your items particularly well. It's very easy to swap out an engine one of your crew members is actively using without realizing it.

The car combat is fun and feels much more exciting once abilities start to get unlocked. It never occurred too much to become irritating but never stood out enough to be particularly memorable. I'm glad it was part of the game, but feels like they could do more with it.
