Chefy-Chef is a nice little action platformer that is simple in design and approach. You play as a chef who is in search of ingredients for a dish to make. From what I can tell, there are 60 levels in which you find 3 ingredients: a pineapple, a bottle of milk/cream, and what I believe is either a radish or a turnip. There is also a burger that is hidden in every level. Of the twenty-something levels I've played so far, the burger is easy to find for seasoned video game explorers.

As you play through the game, the levels get progressively harder and more puzzle like. There are three tools (that may or may not show up in a level) that the chef has at his disposal. Each tool has a different purpose and set of circumstances in which it should/can be used. The first tool that you find in the game is a knife. The knife can be thrown at enemies and can also be used to climb on walls. After being thrown at an enemy, there is a short cooldown before it can be thrown again or used to climb on walls. I admittedly took damage a few times because I did not wait for the cooldown before trying to climb a wall after killing an enemy. The next tool is a hammer. The hammer can be used to bounce the chef into the air. This can be done on flat ground or spikes. The hammer can also be used to destroy breakable ground that is below. The final tool is the frying pan. The frying pan can be thrown, and if a button is pressed before it collides with something, the chef will teleport to its location.

The game was tagged as a metroidvania, but I would say it is closer to an action platformer or puzzle platformer. It kind of makes me think of The Lost Vikings as the player has to solve small puzzles or obstacles in order to progress to a different section. The gameplay is fun and simple to pick up. In my 90ish minutes of playing, I was able to progress a little more than a third of the way through the game and unlock all the achievements. I would have liked if the developers saved some achievements for the latter two thirds of the game.

At the time of purchase, the game was on sale for 1.49 USD, and it was/is worth every penny. I like to think about video games like movie tickets. If I go to the movie theater, I am spending at least $10.00 on admission alone, and I am getting anywhere between 1.5-2.5 hours worth of entertainment. With Chefy-Chef, I only paid $1.49 and I have gotten more than 1.5 hours of entertainment so far, and I plan to continue playing it to completion.

Overall, Chefy-Chef is an entertaining action platformer that is well worth the price of admission. If you are a fan of the genre, I definitely recommend picking it up. It can be finished in an afternoon, but it would be interesting to speedrun and see how fast one might be able to finish either an any % or 100% run.
