Soul Hackers 1 (second Devil Summoner) was re-released and localised on the 3DS in 2013
A Persona player would not care if it was a SMT spinoff..
It hurts but it's better if they don't put SMT on the title.
SMT is 100000% the better game but people want persona and atlus wants money.. So, you know..
I think calling all other Megami Tensei games Persona would hurt more than help, too. As funny as it would be to do so, once the average Persona fan finds out(if they even play the games) that you can't simulate dating the characters, they'll be massively disappointed.
SMT in the title wouldn't help sales more than having a hot girl in the art would. But I think the '2' in the title is detrimental. Since the first isn't even slightly available and the game isn't a sequel. A non numeric word would be better.
I wanted to give SMT another shot, but there seems to be a lot of different versions of it and I have no idea where would be a good place to jump in, also the gameplay (from what little I can remember) didn't jive with me very much.
All that said...Yeah, I want this to say SMT. It's part of that series (or a part of a part of that series).
I'm gonna say 'no' to that. I think you don't understand, or are at least belittling, why people like Persona. It's not the 'dating' aspect of it (cuz let's be honest, the 'dating' part of the games is barely anything, hardly enough to even nibble on). I would bet it's the general gameplay, presentation, and the way the Persona games do their story and character interactions is why the average Persona fan play that instead of SMT. (But as I said above, I haven't played much of SMT, so what I'm saying here is more of a guess based on what I've seen/heard from those who have played SMT and Persona.)
It is in fact the social simulation aspect of it all. Find discussion on any Megami Tensei game in any community where someone new is inquiring about the game, the most common questions asked are how similar is it to Persona and if romance/friendship building are apart of the game. You yourself are an example of what I am talking about, even mentioning the character interactions. If they weren't such a big deal, you'd already have had a hefty playthrough of various non-Persona Megami Tensei games.
There's really nothing wrong with only playing a narrow amount of games, but to brush off the KEY reason why Persona is the only Megaten game with any kind of broad recognition among people who play the video games is outright ignoring reality.
Persona Dancing Trilogy are the best Megaten games that are not Strange Journey
Hell, even having numbers in the title can be bad. This is why some games nowadays decided to go with secondary titles instead of numbers, like Yakuza: Like a Dragon, instead of Yakuza 8.
