Honestly as a casual newbie to SMT it was watching that which got me onboard and pretty much made me hyped for picking this up.
They pick the name that will help selling the game. Most people doesn't know what Shin Megami Tensei means anyway.

Yes I'm aware the first Devil Summoner game had SMT in Japan, that doesn't really matter. It doesn't help that Atlus West added fuel to the fire by putting SMT on literally everything they released after Shin Megami Tensei III up to Persona 4 The Golden.
They're all a seperate sub-series of Megami Tensei.
