I have the first game in my library should I play it first?
I've had it for a while in my library but haven't come around trying it. Can I just jump into the second one or should I try the first game first?

Isn't that kind of like asking whether or not you should see "The Return of The King" before seeing "The Fellowship of The Ring"?

Well i never played space marine 1 and still enjoyed sm2 without feeling the need to play sm1. It's the same for alot of games.

Yes, the first one is pretty important. Great game too.
You could watch a ten minute story summary otherwise it is a long game. KCD2 is it's own story with references to past events from the first game.

Hmm that's what i thought. It's not a continuation then.
I can definitely recommend the first part on its very own as it has got the same open world setting, a lot of places to discover and a lot of hidden and apparent dangers to be dealt with. Moreover, the story is also quite captivating. All in all, KDC1 offers the same high level of immersion and being one with this medieval setting as the second part. Knowing the first part also helps to immediately dive into the new story despite the fact that kDC2 offers some explanations and flashbacks. From my point of view, not playing the first part definitely means missing out on something great.

If you have the first game, I would recommend playing it or at least give it a try. Story wise you will have better knowledge of what is going on and if you will like / can work with the mechanics of the first game, you will know what to expect in KCD2. Story recap at the beginning of the KCD2 might leave you with some questions.

The final scene of KCD1 is the opening scene of this one. Definitely a continuation, but you could catch up on the story without playing the first one. Recommend playing the first one, though.

I'm struggling through the first one... not loving it so far. I'm 5 hours in and still haven't hit "open world" and the combat is pretty rough.

You should play the first game. 30 hours into KCD2 and it's basically the same game, just modernized a bit and picking up right after the end of the story of the first one. It would be like reading book 2 or watching the 2nd movie in a series without seeing the first one.

Combat in KCD1 was for a lot of people the biggest obstacle. It is designed for 1v1 combat and fighting multiple people at once was extremly hard. I would recommend a lot of training sessions with captain Bernard to get used to some combos and learn masterstrikes.
Additionaly I would recommend using console command wh_pl_showfirecursor 1 to have visible cursor for bows. It makes it much better experience shooting.
