This is a normal game but I chose to control neither team. And well, it was pretty fun to watch too IMO.
Anyway, I should explain how it works because it still requires some user actions on the field.
There is an option called Coach Mode. What it does is it allows the user controlled player on the field to move without us having to move them (so they are controlled by the AI). With Coach Mode on we can call a play and watch it unfold on the field by not pressing any buttons after we snap the ball.
Speaking of snapping the ball, the AI won't snap the ball, we have to snap it. This is so we can determine how much clock we use before we snap the ball and allows us to make pre-snap play adjustments.
Speaking of pre-snap play adjustments. These are also done by us. The AI QB does not call audibles or adjust routes. Same for defensive adjustments.
Another thing we have to do ourselves is field goals, kickoffs, and punts because the AI can't know where we want to aim and how hard we want to kick the ball.
At the bare minimum what's required of the user to fully finish a game in Coach Mode is to call plays, snap the ball, and do kicks. The rest of the user controls in Coach Mode, like audibles and pre play adjustments, can be ignored if you wish.
I didn't use the Coach Mode much (other than to try it out) so there may be other subtle functions that are required by the user that I didn't notice or list here.
Yes, Coach Mode can be used in Franchise. No, you don't need a controller to play.
I suggest the first thing you should do is check to make sure that Coach Mode does exist in 23. That way, if it doesn't have Coach Mode, you can refund the game before going over the 2 hour mark.
In Madden 22 the Coach Mode option is found in the Settings menu (accessed from the main menu).
Main menu > Settings > Game Options > Coach Mode
I assume, if it exists in 23, it will be found in the same location.
You can let the cpu play the games for you and watch it, just simulate the games or take control and play for yourself.
As soon as you're in a match you can select "Super Sim" it's the left analog stick press. Then select "Speed" to "slow" with the "X" (Xbox controller) or "Square" (PS controller) button.
From there you have numerous options in the "Custom Play Options" tab.
You can play full game (offense and defense), only offense or only defense, or you can simply just select "Jump Forward" in the "main menu" and set it to "end of game" to let the CPU play for you against the other CPU.
As long as the speed is set to "slow" you can watch every play. If the speed is set to "fast" it will simulate.
