i love this game but this bug and LACK of folks able to fix it makes this game the worst i ever played on steam!!! and im a hard core fan of DeadSpace!!!

so if ANYONE has encountered this problem please give me a shout on fixes!

Hi. I usually encounter this kind of problem when my gamepads (which are not xbox 360 controllers) are connected to the PC before launching the game.
If you have controllers connected (or bluetooth peripherals):
=> Either disconnect them before launching the game
=> or emulate those controllers as xbox 360 controllers by using emulators such as x360ce, xpadder, etc... (I use x360ce personnaly)

I have the same problem. I've tried those same fixes. I've also tried unplugging all peripherals from my laptop before launching, and still no luck.
This bug makes the game completely unplayable, and that unskippable scene at the start is an absolute pain in the backside to sit through everytime you want to test if a new fix idea has worked.
I really want to play this game as I've heard so many great things about it, but I just can't with it in this state. :berserk:

Just found a fix that worked for me.
I've seen loads of 'fixes' about editing the joypad.txt file, but the following is one that worked for me.

1. Browse to your Documents and find the Electronic Arts\Dead Space folder.
2. Open the "joypad_example" text file. You might want to make a backup copy of this file in case the fix doesn't work for you.
3. Replace both "Z-Axis" and "Z-Rotation" (found at the bottom) with "Off". Save and close the file.
4. Rename the file to "joypad" and start the game.

Ty Scioptic, sadly it did not work for me as the game ignores the text file for it, IT did help my freind with the problem but there something more to it than that file i think the game is JUST broken 100% im regreting getting the humblebundle with this game... ALL but Sims3 works all other games has an issue here and there

MY message to folks, DON'T GET HUMBLEBUNDLE stuff... they toss in corrupt games

Sadly im gonna just have to toss this game away in the trash as its cleary not working

Hi I purchased Dead Space awhile ago yet due to multiple bugs didn't play. I finally have it where I can actually start the game now however I have the auto spinning issue now. You say go to the Dead Space folder in Documents. Yet when I do this the folder is empty. I see no joypad_example txt file. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I install my games on a secondary HD, but it's not within the steam apps folder in there where you'll find this.
The path on mine is My Documents > Electronic Arts > Dead Space, and was found on my primary HD (despite the game being installed on the secondary).
If this folder is empty, then create a notepad file called joypad.exe and copy in the following:

Pad.Back = Button.9
Pad.LeftStick.Click = Button.11
Pad.LeftStick.X = X-Axis
Pad.LeftStick.Y = Y-Axis.Inverted
Pad.RightDPad.Down = Button.3
Pad.RightDPad.Left = Button.4
Pad.RightDPad.Right = Button.2
Pad.RightDPad.Up = Button.1
Pad.RightStick.Click = Button.16
Pad.RightStick.X = off
Pad.RightStick.Y = off
Pad.Start = Button.10
Pad.Trigger.LeftBottom = Button.5
Pad.Trigger.LeftTop = Button.7
Pad.Trigger.RightBottom = Button.6
Pad.Trigger.RightTop = Button.8

Hopefully that will work for you :D:

What worked for me...

Under 'My Documents' I found two folders created when the game was first played:
'Electronic Arts'
'Electrontic Arts'

Under each of those folders was a subfolder named 'Dead Space'.
The Dead Space folder under the parent folder with the bad spelling had in it joypad_example.txt.
I made a copy of that file and saved it as joypad.txt.
In joypad.txt I completely removed the following two lines:

Pad.RightStick.X = Z-Axis
Pad.RightStick.Y = Z-Rotation

I saved the modified joypad.txt to both of the 'Dead Space' folders.

Problem resolved!

Though I'm nearly 4 years late to this party, this is what worked for me. I had no "joypad" file of any kind, anywhere on my computer. Created a txt file (not the "exe" file as Scioptic stated. Guessing it was a typo.) and pasted in all the above text. Worked flawlessly after trying all the other "fixes" I found everywhere else. Thanks a ton, man!

... However, 20 minutes into actually playing the game, and I've found it to be the worst PC port I've ever played. Playing it on an xbox360 controller (which everyone agrees is really the only way to play that game) has some of the worst control bugs I've ever encountered. For a couple minutes, "A" works as the "enter" key and "B" works for "exit". Then for no reason it switches. The "aim & fire" combo (LT + RT) only switches the firing orientation, unless you rapidly press the RB button, and then sometimes it will fire. Reload worked once by accident, and then never again. I invested a few hours looking into fixing some of the numerous bugs reported all over the internet and now it's just not worth the time. Uninstalling.
I fixed both the spinning and menu problems, with a small change to the method above.

I created the joypad.txt file as mentioned above, making sure it is placed in the folder WITH THE CORRECT SPELLING (Electronic Arts\Dead Space\), even though the joypad_example.txt is in the folder WITH THE WRONG SPELLING (Electrontic Arts\Dead Space).

The game seems to screw up the menus and a lot of other things, if you invert ANY axis, so I changed
Pad.LeftStick.Y = Y-Axis.Inverted
to
Pad.LeftStick.Y = Y-Axis

...and everything worked great, except I like to have Y-Axis inverted on right stick (look). When using the joypad.txt file, the axis-options in the game do not change anything. So, in my controller software (I use SCPToolkit, in order to utilize my PS3 controller, and it has a program called 'SCPToolkit Settings Manager'), I set my Y-axis to inverted, and presto it works with inverted, and the menus are positioned correctly. Apparently, the game uses the axis-settings in the options-menu, to position the menus. I'm sure most of the other gamepad controller software packages have a similar option.

Scioptic solution SOLVED for me. Dead Space downloaded for free from EA.

The big question is: Scoptic, how did you know the solution?
Sorry to comment on a 'solved' issue, but I am having this issue, and have completely EXHAUSTED this page in its entirety.

I've;
-Created and modified text documents in BOTH folders [turning off both L-stick and R-stick configurations, as well.]
-Verify Game Files [integrity]
-Mouse drivers; disable/enable/fix/update
-V-sync disable
-Started the game WITHOUT the gamepad plugged in
-Started game and UNPLUGGED everything [gamepad, mouse, keyboard, and all external HD's]
-Uninstall/Reinstall

It STILL looks up and left in the menu/during gameplay.

I did notice, going into the menu options, if I inverted either the X or Y-axis, that it'd look in the other direction [if both enabled, it looked down-right always]

NONE of the above 'resolutions' fixed my game.
I am convinced that the Steam version is, in fact, self aware and does NOT want to work.

If someone could tell me I'm doing anything wrong, please add me and just assist me.

this is a long shot but had simular problem on another game had to remap the controls then remap them back it stopped a always moving bug ..good luck

i found a fix but this made it impossible to play on a gamepad, i basicaly made a Blank notepad and titled the "joypad.exe" be sure to remove the (1) infront of the joypad text name on the notepad, as its prevents that script to work.

then delete the old notepad or slap a (1) before or after the text file name to deactivate it.

launch game and it will run the blank file that disables the controller 100%, after that had to fix the mouse issues with the game as its runs like a potato, is sad the game was ported from xbox and slaped together slopily to PC.

great game love it, and beat it with using keyboard, i find its more accurate controles that way.
