Dead Space (2008)

Dead Space (2008)

Mouse cursor/startup problems
I bought Dead Space retail back in 2008 when it released, and played it for years with zero issues.
In the past few years, I registered it with Origin so I wouldn't have to bother with the disc anymore.

Recently, while killing time for Fallout 4, I decided to give Dead Space another run.
Installed it through Origin. But, when trying to play... I have two mouse cursors. The white Windows cursor, the in game blue one.

I've tried everything suggested I could find. Disabling Origins' in game overlay makes the game unplayable. With the overlay disabled, when the title screen comes up and says "Press Any Key"... the game doesn't register anything.
I can press any and every key but it never goes to the menu.
And, both mouse cursors still appear.

I've tried various compatibility settings, nothing is working.

I love Dead Space, it's one of my favorite series. And I'm considering rebuying it through STEAM... but, concerned it wouldn't matter as I will just run into this issue again.

Does anyone here have any suggestions?

Couple of things I'd suggest trying:

A.) Alt tabbing out and then clicking on the game icon on your taskbar
B.)It almost sounds like the game is starting in a window but you can't get into the game, try adding -fullscreen in the command line arguments, click on the game in your library, click the i button next to play, go to game properties and add the command line, not sure if that works for the game but if it is starting in a window, maybe it will force it to fullscreen.

These are just suggestions to try if you already haven't and are in no way guaranteed to work.

Also, try running the game directly from the EXE file and not running it from the Origin library.

Lastly go to C:\Users\(username)\AppData\Local\Electronic Arts\Dead Space

open the settings.txt file, see if fullscreen is true there, you can also edit some of the settings directly from this file.

Hope any of this helped.

Already tried alt+tabbing out and clicking on the icon on the taskbar multiple times. No effect.
Also, tried running the game directly from the eve. Again, no effect.

Even tried reinstalling it directly from my retail disc and playing it without Origin. But, even through that install, when started... it starts up Origin and loads that version.

EDIT: Game is coming up Fullscreen. In the settings.cfg file, it's fullscreen = true.

Fixed it.

Disabling all four HID-compliant devices in the Device Manager fixed the issue. With those disabled I was able to turn off the overlay in Origin.
This allowed me to get past the title screen, and got rid of the double mouse cursor problem.

Only functionality I lost was the music controls on my Saitek Eclipse II keyboard.

I'm going to test a bit more, see if it's just one, or a combination of a few that are causing the issue.

Wow, that is an unusual thing to be causing a problem but I'm glad you found a solution

I remembered people having performance problems playing FEAR with Logitech keyboards. Disabling HID-compliant devices fixed that for them.

Just figured, why not. :)
Sorry for digging up this old topic, but Ive run into the same issue and deactivating whatever it is in the device manager or disabling the overlay doesnt work. Any other solutions? I also looked, it is fullscreen.
