Any way to turn whispers off?

Whispers generally annoy the ♥♥♥♥ out of me. I HATE whispering. Is there any way I can turn them off/disable them in this game?

Turn off your speakers, lol.
No way that I know of, they should be an integral part of the ambient sounds, and they specifically put it there to annoy you... so they're doing their job pretty well it seems.

I imagine the intent is to spook players, freak them out, rather than annoy them.

For anybody else wanting to stop the whispers, I think I may have a solution. I went digging in the game installation files and found a folder:

"[Your game drive letter]:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Dead Space\audiostreams\_whisper"

Decided to try and rename that folder to _whisperOLD and see if the game still runs. So far, so good. No crashes yet, and no more whispers!

Yeah, I know, a bit peculiar ... thankfully it being done that way made it easy for me. Seems like all the audio events (of types) have separate folders, too. So I imagine more could be similarly disabled. I'm already thinking of that squawking creature that sounds like some old hag. That said, if I disabled that I'd get no notice of 'her' arrival. Hmm ...

It's part of the experience, but I totally get how you feel. Whispers in my opinion is just a really cheap attempt to scare the audience. Annoying doesn't equate to scary. It's just annoying.

I know exactly what you mean OP, people whispering in real life irritates me to no end, especially those stupid freaking youtube videos where people whisper like they're right next to your ear. Punch face annoying. But for some reason the whispering ambiance in this game doesn't bother me at all. It fits in very well and it's so subtle that it does a good job of creeping me out more than annoying me. Nice to know the game is so well built that we can completely remove the sound files from the game and it still runs fine though.

I had to laugh at your post ^ I can't tell you how many youtube vids I've "rage quit" when the person started whispering. As bad as those who start eating something. GRRR. Yeah, 'punch face' annoying. Great expression. :D

As you mention it, there are some occasions when the whispering in games doesn't annoy me. Like Assassin's Creed with the approach of a pursuer (just freaks me out because I know danger is nearing). But I really don't know why some whispering does annoy me 'punch face' level, and some doesn't.

Anyway, still running ok, so it must be fine to do what I did with the folder. Such a shame I'm so bad at the game :S but that's another discussion. Fumbling on with chapter 8 ...
