No way that I know of, they should be an integral part of the ambient sounds, and they specifically put it there to annoy you... so they're doing their job pretty well it seems.
I imagine the intent is to spook players, freak them out, rather than annoy them.

Decided to try and rename that folder to _whisperOLD and see if the game still runs. So far, so good. No crashes yet, and no more whispers!
As you mention it, there are some occasions when the whispering in games doesn't annoy me. Like Assassin's Creed with the approach of a pursuer (just freaks me out because I know danger is nearing). But I really don't know why some whispering does annoy me 'punch face' level, and some doesn't.
Anyway, still running ok, so it must be fine to do what I did with the folder. Such a shame I'm so bad at the game :S but that's another discussion. Fumbling on with chapter 8 ...
