iirc the devs said yes they were heavily inspired by The Thing for the monster design, but they mostly used reference photos of car crash victims for the details.

Can't believe none of you mentioned System Shock 2, where Dead Space takes A LOT of inspiration and elements from and even has nearly the same setting/plot almost to an extent

The original Thing was 1951... 1982... 2011. It's interesting to see how the genre has evolved.

Well. Not really, Dead Space 3 however WAS inspired by The Thing. The other games started as System Shock way back, but had nothing to do with System Shock in general. Alien/Aliens maybe, however the concept design for Necromorphs are highly original.

The original pitch for Dead Space was System Shock 3. They had already begun on this path when Resident Evil 4 came out and they decided to implement ideas from that as well, morphing into what we have now.
