There is a description on how to edit the 'controls.rmp' file for Dead Space, and toward the bottom, a download for an edited file. Works great.
Note: some of the other keys are not at the defaults, in the download file, so you may need to reset some of the other mappings.
All I have to say is this : Keys gained by using ESDF --> http://i.imgur.com/Lqdqokj.png
Follow the fix guides because you can remap certain things specifically the most important like movement. The fix works for arrow keys so it may let you remap them also to what your preferences are. The controls are a little quirkey in this game in trying to figure out what does what especially when navigating the RIG and hologram hud but you get used to it. I use the remapping tweak and the Widescreen Fixer fix for increasing the game's FOV.
You suggest to follow the fix guides regarding remapping. You mean in the Guides tab of this game page? ...because I don't see any. I also use the arrow keys and would love to play this game. I tried a Key Remapper which works for some games but not this one it seems. Any tips appreciated. Cheers.
There's a special little utility someone made called DeadSpaceKeys and it has its own executable and there is also a file called DeadSpaceMouseFix that has a dinput8.dll file. Finally there's a controls.rmp file that apparently someone edited as well. Because its been a few years and because I'm uncertain as to whether the original guide I used still exists here on Steam I'm not sure if I can be of any help as I don't remember exact install procedures at this moment.
The only google search that brought up something about the key changing tool I mentioned that I could quickly find is a steam thread but I don't remember if that's where I got my help and not only that, the links within now lead to unsecured sites so I don't know if its safe to travel there or even if the utility can still be found there.
Thanks for the reply first of all. Appreciated. I can't find the DeadSpaceKeys utility as it sounds quite handy. All I'm seeing is something music related and some game key generating BS.
I have made progress in running the game however and I think I may have jumped through the last hoop. I did find the mouse dinput8.dll you mentioned and I also found the FOV fix, even though I have to mess with that every time I start the game. I also found a thread that points to a dropbox location with a .rmp file that now allows me to use the directional arrows. I'll include the link as some people reading this may find it helpful : https://www.gog.com/forum/dead_space/about_the_unbindable_arrow_keys_heres_a_fix
So, finally got things up and running and.....yep.....the invisible wall. Searched around for that fix which was easy to find and is a simple v-sync issue with an easy solution.
That's as far as I have got but things seem to be ok as yet. This title has literally been in my inventory for years and has remained unplayed because I simply could not find a way around the WASD issue. I thought I'd have another crack at getting it to work. It's taken a fair amount of time and digging around but I have definitely made more progress this time around. I'm just hoping that I don't run into any more issues as the game looks totally worth my time. I'm running it in 4K too so it looks decent. First person shooters (or third in this case) are kinda my thing, especially sci-fi shooters like DOOM, Quake and the Crysis franchise. I hope I can make some progress with Dead Space as I have only heard good things about it...apart from the time you have to put in to get it to run properly of course.
I'll throw another comment up here when I get deeper into the game.
It sounds like you found what you need though. Mainly for folks like us the fixes needed are remapped movement keys to arrows, fov fix, mouse fix and 60fps. I think its Widescreen Fixer that I used for that and its a great little utility that I also use for LA Noir. 60 fps I think was achieved by disabling in-game verticle sync and forcing it through Nvidia control panel. Then the Tool Utility to change the key bindings or that the very least the .rmp file that somone edited to get the key changes to arrows. I'm not sure if the .rmp changes any other keys or not but I think the tool allows you to change more. I recall that not only were my controls changed to direction arrows which is what I've always used in gaming but also changes the controls so that all the HUD and inventory stuff is controlled using the keypad keys.
I had a similar first experience with Dead Space too. Quite a few years ago now I bought the game on Direct2Drive. Right out of the box the game was all but broken because of all these issues the game has until these fixes are applied. Then I lost all my games I purchased when D2D changed companies. I purchased the game again on Steam and went through available tutorials at the time to fix all the game breaking issues and the game ran like a champ and looked excellent and played excellent. It turned out to be one of the better scifi games I've ever played. I still love whatever engine it is that they used for this game. I also remember at the start experimenting with using the game pad fix to be able to use a controller but the movement and especially aiming was like walking on ice. I just stuck with mouse and keyboard and that's the best way in my opinion. Also the game takes to forcing anit-aliasing very well. I used 8x multi-sample and the game looked great in that regard too.
I'm now trying the sequel which I'm actually using the controller now which it seems to be primarily designed around now for the sequel. Unfortunately the quirk I've run into the second game(thankfully there are not as many as the first game it would appear)is that there is no good anti-aliasing options including not being able to force anything in Nvidia control panel which is crazy. Man if its not one thing its another. Three steps forward, one step back. The only thing that works in Nvidia that I've been able to research and attempt is FXAA and that's it which isn't the greatest solution. I have yet to try something like reshade to see if AA can be forced.
I've never heard of Direct2Drive but it sucks that you lost all your games. How do they justify that ?? The only time I've used any controller is with a PS2 and that was many years ago. I really am a mouse and keyboard person when it comes to PC games. Always used the directional arrow. I don't know why, it just happened that way and stayed.
Well after all these years with this game sat in my inventory, the verdict is that it's definitely worth the time to research all the fixes needed to get the game running in a way that suits you. Although somewhat clunky in parts and of course slightly dated, it is indeed a great game. The zero G element is a nice touch. I don't know the engine used but it looks good. I really do not know how people play with the intended FOV. I simply find it impossible to play like that. I guess it was intended for intensity? I do have Dead Space 2 and I will definitely be playing through that one also. Is it the same deal with the locked WASD? Well if there's no way to force anti-aliasing in Nvidia control panel I guess FXAA is better than nothing but not the greatest option.
I think I might be about halfway into the game or maybe slightly more now. Looking forward to getting into the sequel !
From what I can tell, the sequel had more options in the way of keybindings. I haven't played in awhile but if memory serves the camera and fov is better. The camera though kind of swings around the center of the character model differently which feels a little weird at first.
