Since you already do, jack the sensitivity all the way up - through Windows, not through the game's mouse sensitivity.
Other than that, I have a save file that I literally JUST cleared that part. I can share it if you want.
I completely agree with the weird unresponsiveness playing with the controller.
Finally did it guys! Thanks for all the advice! Reduced resolution all the way to 800x600, switched to mouse instead of controller and maxed out the mouse sensitivity. I was very tempted to take you up on your offer Ordo about the save file.
Finished with 3% hull integrity. Phew! I don't know if this minigame was necessary for the main storyline, but I'm happy nonetheless that I can continue on with the game
This minigame is easily the single most annoying part about the game. It just feels like it doesn't belong and they only put it there because Resident Evil 4 has "Turret" parts in it. You will never have to do it again, in any of the other games, ever. So there's that.
As you already figured out, using the mouse makes it a lot easier, but also consider enabling Vsync via your graphics driver (not the in-game option) as this will make the aiming much more responsive and consistent, and iirc also slows the rate that the asteroids appear and your guns overheat.
Gameplay wise, just focus on the biggest ones. Don't waste your time chasing all the smaller ones around the peripheral as most will not even hit you or do minimal damage anyways. And lastly, often overlooked is that you can alternate R/L mouse buttons on the cannon to keep up a sustained fire without overheating.
This is how I've always done it and never had any issues clearing this section. Hopefully it helps someone else.
I'm slowly converting to PC only instead of 360, money allowing, but I'm stumbling a little trying to figure out resolutions, frame rates, application was blocked from using graphics card
For asteroids that have multple parts, use both barrels.
If you are surrounded by asteroids, press the right and left buttons right after each press constantly.
There is a similar turret mission after fixing the comms dish. You have to shoot of a Huge thing outside of the ship with tentacles.
I know. But while it's similar in terms of mechanics, it's far easier - and unlike the asteroids one that gets harder as you progress, this one gets easier as you progress since you shoot off the tentacles so the thing throws less rubbish at you. The similarities are negligible, as a result.
