It IS possible to then transfer the DLC to the Steam version but that's a lot of screwing around just for one (really crappy) DLC.
If you don't mind missing a few time trials that don't affect the game or future games in any way then just skip Pinnacle Station and install Bring Down The Sky from here:: https://help.ea.com/article/mass-effect-bring-down-the-sky-dlc-redemption
Copying a folder and creating a text file with copied text takes about a minute.

Well yes but that's after they've downloaded Mass Effect via Origin first.
I just meant I'm not so sure it's worth downloading the whole game via Origin just to transfer the Pinnacle Station DLC across to the Steam version.
Or can people just download the DLC?
Not legally anymore. Although I for instance have a stand-alone version of it on Origin.
The above information is outdated; Bioware is providing both DLCs for free nowadays, you can grab them here:
https://help.ea.com/en-us/help/dragon-age/dragon-age-origins/bioware-classics-dlc
Pinnacle Station requires a Key, which is provided; BDtS runs even witout a key.
Sorry, that page doesn't exist!
The page I linked says it no longer exists for me too. However the page above linked by KrOnoz does.
