I like the robots in this game.
I actually really like the design of the robots in Starfield. I'm not entirely sure how to sum up why I do, I just find them to be a more appealing style of robot than say androids or synths. Its very easy to tell who is and isn't human, and there aren't any moral hangups about making them do what would otherwise be slave work due to them literally being built to serve.
On top of that, while not looking human you can still very well see them as friends and companions because of their bipedal stature and basic social programming. For me I kinda find their overly verbose speech patterns a bit charming and goofy with how they put words together.
In the future, I really hope to see robots with similar design choices in real life. This came to mind after seeing news that there are now humanoid robots commercially available for sale, and I just thought they looked and sounded really uncanny and off-putting. I'd much rather have a robot companion that looks like Vasco than what we've been seeing IRL so far.

Yeah, I want a robot companion IRL who doesn't mind when I accidentally shoot a cop. It was an accident, ok? Can happen to anyone.
Gotta love Vasco. For one thing, he's the only one who calls you by name. (Of course that's if your name is one of the 11000+ names programmed into the game.)

I think it's supposed to be a callback to how Codsworth was able to recognize a whole bunch of names in Fallout 4. They even went back and added a bunch of joke names that they were sure people would give themselves just to see what would happen. For example: Captain Assface, Captain Nipple, Captain Boobies, Captain Orgasmo, so on so on. (The pronunciation on each is f/cking gold lmao)

It is a bit refreshing to have robots as tools; most don't have any sort of social functionality and are, in fact, quite difficult to mistake for sentient beings; it's not even trying to explore that over-used trope.

Vasco does have some good insights/logical conclusions at times, though; for instance, how the lack of records of meetings with Starborn can be from not meeting them - or noone surviving to report meeting them. However, there's little reason to asssume his continued assurances he has no emotions cannot be taken at face value.

Your allready do; your roomba certainly doesn't have an opinion on the subject.

It's shame, this starfield don't had gameplay features fallout 4 automatron, that dlc is gameplay fun where you can custom and build robot! I don't understand why starfield didn't had this one.

I think its cool when robots are like for sure not human / don't possess human qualities like sentience or emotions, but can still be treated as friends.

And if you use mods I've noticed some decent options for robot type characters.

I'd imagine this wouldn't be too hard as computers have been able to read text for quite sometime. Just run an in engine program that allows for vasco to read your name via text when prompted

I don't think Vasco is voice acted but I could be totally wrong

Actually, Vaso was voice acted! His voice actor was Jake Green.

I wasn't thrilled with them to start out, but I've grown to appreciate how unique their design is in the grand scheme of sci-fi robots. It's still a bit odd to see a medical robot have the exact same frame as a field robot, but cool all the same.

Technology in starfield is very modular; it seems to be a popular design path. It fits somewhat with the world of starfield not having the same scientific progress as earth has; frontier living tend to be good at adaptation and innovation but not research. Considering all research is so insular and secretive that you have many facilities researching the exact same thing *cough*, it's obviously highly ineffective and slow on a societal level. Modular fits well then.
And, like me, they love their coffee.

They are all robots.
Agreed, I've always stood by the art of the game being generally great but it's good to call out the robots as particularly good. It's gotta be hard to come up with an aesthetic that you can pick out from across the room as being distinct and recognizable, in a genre that's done it so many times.

My neat-picks are how many of them have that big saucer head. Which references the circle shape that's used throughout the design. But that's also well used to distinguish Vasco with his blocky head as different, outside the norm. Great use of fundamental shapes there.

I really like the clear modularity of them, and that you can make out a distinct lineage of makes and models. Particularly I liked the police one in the town square at new Atlantis that's modulars added with the riot shield shoulders patrolling the war memorial. One of the precious few visual storytelling and world building moments. You could kinda visualize how a robot with that could work as part of a unit, with officers following behind getting some extra cover from the shields on the edges, but the robot itself was mostly exposed to fire and sacrificial. And that they permanently post it at the memorial with special dialogue hints that there's been issues with the recent war and vandalism.

The one in the shop at neon, also a great one. Fun little mini story there talking with the shop keep.

If anything really they kinda under used them. Like I'd almost have expected every time you come across Pirate or spacer patrol to see one with them. I think it's pretty unfortunate that they just completely recycled the charging chambers from Fallout though, including the hacking them thing. That was a let down. I get that it's a trope and all that but it just came off as one of the lazy copy pasta parts of it. Like a really missed opportunity to make them have a unique infrastructure.
