But it's also on gamepass, so you could try there first.
The main story quest is quite long but the real magic is in the side missions and faction quests. The ship builder is a lot of fun too. As is the ship and outpost decorating.
This is probably your best option, if you its available to you. That, or watch some lets plays. Just enough to get the feel of the game. See if its something you'd like.
IMHO well worth it - but... ...it apparently isn|' everyone's taste.
The main storyline can take quite a while - or you can pull the difficulty sliders to low and just rush through it in maybe 50h, if the explore-y gameplay isn't your thing. There are several faction sidequest lines of similar length, too.
The DLC... ...well, it's well made, and rounds off the Starfield-Universe's lore, but I had actually hoped for a bit more content. Still worth the surcharge, but compared to the basegame it felt a bit short regarding the amount of new content.
As to the length of the story: That depends on your playstyle. You can dawdle along and investigate everything, or you can rush through and quickly complete the various objectives. I tend to take my time the first time I do a quest. But I often rush through on subsequent plays.
I like space-themed games also. And you should keep in mind that this one is not perfect. It does have some flaws. Of course, no game is perfect for everyone. You might be wise to investigate some youtube gameplay videos to see if it appeals to you. And, of course, you can try the game on gamepass first to see if you like it.
When I first got it, I got bored and ended up rushing to finish the story so I at least got my moneys worth.
It depends why you're buying it though, if it's for immersion and modding like Skyim, this isn't the game for you. If you want to repeat the same fetch quests hundreds of times with minimal lore, very basic combat and a tonne of pointless dialogue, then you might like it, although if that's what you like you might as well play one of those JRPG visual novels.
2,000 hours vanilla = game well done.
1,000 with mods = many great mods already available for this game and I don't even use Bethesda's Creations which is another very very large pool of mods to select from, many are Creations only type mods and the majority are free. Of course all mods on Nexus are free.
Story might be 30 hours long if you don't take your time and less if you breeze right through it. Side quests I'm not sure how long it takes to play them all, I hear 11+ hours.
I spend much more time exploring and surveying, building outposts and ships, as well as ship and ground battles.
Put it this way, knowing what I know now I'd buy the game again and at full price but that's me.
There is a community here of trolls that hate Bethesda and are trying to disrupt these forums.
I paid $70, and enjoyed it but in my opinion a lot of the complaints are justified. (you might need to wade through a lot of garbage posts to really see those complaints, though... This forum can get cluttered quickly.) But it's still a Bethesda action/rpg. In space. Which is pretty cool, in spite of the missed opportunities and poorly implemented design features.
The game is definitely a slow starter and I don't think the 2 hour refund window is enough to really decide if you're gonna enjoy the ride.
in skyrim terms, its about half the size for quest chains and meaningful (not random generated or incomplete like TA) content.
