Is it better now?
It's been over a year now - so, is the game worth playing yet? As far as I remember, it faced quite a bit of criticism regarding performance, gameplay, and various other issues.

That's why I decided to skip it back then, even though I really wanted to play a "space-themed" game like this.

So, how is it now? Has it improved, considering it's been over a year since its release?

It was always playable in my opinion, but it's certainly better now, we've had lots of patches and content updates. I would say give it a go.

Yeah, it's been playable for me since day -7, early access. The criticism it face on release is still repeated daily. I didn't agree with it then and I don't agree with it now. You can always do the $1 intro for Gamepass just to try it. That's what I'd recommend if you're not sure. I would not rely on the subjective reports of others, which includes myself.

you can't fix a game that's rotten from the core.

Luckily it's not rotten to the core.

Same experience as both of you.

I started at early access and the game was fully playable at launch and has remained so to this day.

Not only has there been NO improvement to the base game, the studio and the fans continue to attack anybody that criticizes the game.

Worse business model ever ...lol

Saying there has been no improvements to the game is false. There have been numerous improvements in the form of bug fixes, content such as the trackers alliance and REV-8 vehicle, ship decorating. Also added support for dlss and FSR.

Also we've had an expansion too.

And fans stating facts is not "attacking" you.

Although, perhaps, the least said about that expansion, the better.

It was a superb and visually stunning expansion.

Have to agree, very well done, large, one of the best they've ever done.

Indeed, I'm looking forward to my 2nd play through of Shattered Space soon. I missed out on one achievement last time.

Not sure if serious but I will bite.

Performance depends on your hardware. I’ve never had any issues since, as kdodds put it, “day —7” while playing in 4K on ultra settings but if you don’t have a good-sized (at least a terabyte) SSD (NVMe), a beefy CPU and GPU and at least 32 RAM you are guaranteed to have problems.

Gameplay is solid and has always been. That being said, depends on what gameplay you personally prefer. If you played any other Bethesda game then you should know the formula.
It is the biggest, the most ambitious, the most beautiful and the least buggy Bethesda RPG ever, with the NASA punk esthetic.
It is NOT a flight simulator, a date simulator or a Star Wars clone.

As to “various other issues”, I can’t comment since I have no idea what issues exactly you are referring to. Obviously, everyone has his/her own pet peeves.

There are some nice changes but it was always playable and even good on launch. If you like a better version of FO4 in space then you will like it. If you are looking for NMS or Elite "seemless" space then you may not like it.
Regarding bugs. I had very few even on launch. I mean it's Bethesda so expect some but nothing like FO76 that game is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ mess as much as I love it.
