Cargo Linking
I just want to make sure I get how this works. I just set up my first outpost (managed to find one of those all-5 resource spots on Andraphon) as a bit of a figure-it-out exercise, and now I'm in trying to figure out how to optimize. If that's even possible in this pre-modded state!

Basically, it looks like the best thing to do is to set up outposts in a linear manner using Cargo Links? So if I have, say, 7 resource farms, and number 8 is my "home base" where I can research and craft things, and I want all the resources pooling into Outpost 8, I can't just have all the outposts cargo link there directly *but* I can have Outpost 1 >> Outpost 2 >> Outpost 3 etc etc?

I can't wait for the modders to get at this and streamline things. Better inventory management alone would be a huge QOL improvement; it's a hassle trying to store resources when I want to jump in my Mantis and go shoot ♥♥♥♥, but then need to swap over to the Wanderwell for cargo hauling or base building, and all the resources are being stored in the Lodge because I can't just leave all that in the Wanderwell.

If you have outposts in different systems, you need to power the cargo links to other systems with He-3. You can find this, according to a tip on a loading screen, on rocky moons. Then you need this He-3 producing outpost to feed He-3 to each outpost that has a different system cargo link but doesn't produce He-3.

If you can find a system with a bunch of planets and moons you might be able to have all your outposts in the same system which would make things a lot simpler.

Certainly seems like that's the way to go about it, at least for early and mid game.

Keep in mind that cargo links are one to one. You can't build in a circle. You also can only have 3 cargo links per outpost.

It's hard to explain here without typing a dissertation, so I suggest you watch a couple videos until you can wrap your head around it. Make sure you watch videos that were put out in the last few days as everyone has been learning things as they go.

Does system mean planet?

I can only see options for linking to normal links on the same planet

No. A system would be like our solar system, so the planets and moons around a sun. Within a system you can use the regular cargo links.

To link two sites in different systems you need to research a different cargo link. And it becomes more complicated because they need to be fueled by He3.

Build your home base on a place that you feel like you would call home with a nice view, good atmosphere and low to no enemies.
*Setup a solar cargo link! with a loooootttttt of storage of all types.

Setup your extractors/mining on those planets that have the resources with the basic storage/power transporting it to your home base.

DONE! :)

Good luck..what is a solar cargo link? Thought they all ran off helium..

That's the basic idea yeah! Where I'm at now is trying to figure out where's a good "home base" to dump Lin/Heller/Vasco and - most crucially - make it so I can dump all my resources nearby the landing pad vs slow jogging from the Lodge to the Spaceport whenever I switch from shooting people to building things. The resource farm I set up on Andraphon is a good starter, to be sure, but only provides a few of the building blocks and having an assembly line for more or all the core materials would be swell (Lead, Copper, Nickel and Tungsten seemingly being the ones that get used a lot in building materials).

I saw on Reddit that you can build things in transitive sequence though - so, Outpost A cargo links to Outpost B, which also cargo links to Outpost C, etc etc to end at your home base. Because you can dump everything into the Outbound Containers, including the contents of Inbound Containers, you can snowball your resources to all dump into the final home base.

Is that not the case or have people worked out an optimal not-8-teleports route?

I'm trying to sort this out today myself. I have two main systems I mine in, with a planet and moon and another moon in 2nd system. I need to send my mined Helium to the 2 Interstellar cargo pads, for two resources to be delivered to where I want to build the main "crafting everything here" base. (because it has a LOOONNNG sleep timer multiplier) So I need to build a LOT more solar collectors to replace the use of helium on the moon it is mined on. KK, got my mission for the day sorted. Thanks.

If you want to be really cheeky and cut time in the beginning before setting up your cargo outpost transfers. Build a basic ship with a load of storage 2000+ weight and just manually move the mats as it is super easy to fast travel with your ship between sites.

Putting that Wanderwell to good use, but the only real reason I wanted to get this sorted was so that I could go to one place (my "home base") and dump/use the materials I need for crafting. Storing in the Lodge means you have to do a slow walk to and from a ship, and it doesn't seem to me that stored resources in the Lodge are counted when you use the Lodge crafting tables either! And on top of all that, I can't just store items in a ship I'm not using - so my low-cargo Razorleaf and my high-cargo Wanderwell can't be treated like separate ships for the purposes of cargo.

The idea here was just to have a base I can store all the resources, have crafting tables, and do the crafting without needing to carry the stuff on my person - with my landing pad being a lot closer than the New Atlantis spaceport in any case.

If you use the small or large chest in the basement crafting room, the stations use those resources to research & craft.
Some people have the big chest across from the entry stairs. Others hav3 the small chest atop the table right behind the research station, both hold unlimited items.
I put all my soft/animal/vegetable/food items in that one for food & med crafting.
Unique items I want to save for posterity, I put in the safe upstairs in my Lodge stateroom.
Every other resource I put in the main crafting base.
I’m slowly building a wall around it, of 3-height storage containers for minerals & crafted goods. You delete the bottom 2 and it leaves a wall. Kinda tricky with the mountainside, so I’m moving all that to the A moon. and it takes forever, but I’m working on it. I link the top containers in series, and to the transfer link in the middle of base next to my landing pad. So I can jump over and drop resources or crafted items into the wall by remote. Takes a while. But it beats hauling every little item and dumping it in a hab, only to pick it all up again to craft or mod weapons…
the wall also funnels the occasional pirates or Wanted BH squad into a narrow gap covered by my several turrets… hehe.
