When you build a house does rain go through the ceiling or disappear entirely?
Just curious if you can watch the rain from inside your house without it falling through the ceiling from your built house?

I love building but a lot of games either:
Rain falls through ceiling
Rain disappears when you enter house

I'm hoping the rain continues but doesn't fall through ceiling. Is this the case?

if it is I might need to start playing this! I want to build a really nice house! I mostly would play for the building, but I do enjoy NMS so I'm sure I'll love the gameplay of this!

Yes, it fully blocks rain & snow from going indoors, both with the prebuilt buildings, and the ones you build in your outposts. It also has a nice effect of the rain/snow hitting the glass that you can see from inside.

lol, I too enjoy building in games, it can be irritating & break immersion when rain just goes thru the roof, you dont need mods or anything for that here, they baked it into the game, also in some planets you really do need to get out of that rain, it could kill you lol.

If you liked NMS you'll likely love this, its got a whole lot more features & mechanics, & lots of hand crafted content & quests, its only minimally procedural to save hard-drive space on land meshes & such. Building ships is just as fun as building outposts, & if you're really truly into building, I suggest get the Creation Kit, you can build whole POI, Cities, Houses, Quests, anything in the game really.
Oh I just noticed you already started playing, did you not build any outposts yet? Dont forget to check out Nexus Mods for extras in outpost building, there's already about 10,000 mods there for Starfield, & a ton for outposts specifically.

Creation kit I mentioned above is free for anyone that owns the game, can be gotten thru Steam.

I did play a little bit when it first came out but I stopped.

I wanted to wait for it to get some updates and to relax and enjoy it as I was going through busy times and now I feel is the time to start.

So yeah I have bought it, but barely did anything except the intro. :)

Thanks for all the help though, I will definitely check out the modding. Had a quick look over nexus already.

Ahh that makes sense, all things in their proper time. Well I hope you have fun, I know I love the game, Nexus has been rocking it out, ive never seen any game get so many mods in its first year like Starfield did, & its steadily growing.

I do expect we might get an Outpost building related DLC, but they've not announced it yet, either way, modders will continue to expand on the features over time too.

Sorry to bother you again.

What's it like with building locations. Can you build anyhwere? Are there many optional places for bases? Also are there places for bases that are beautiful, like lush and green?

Yes, you can pretty much build anywhere on land (and even, to a slight extent, on water - though that may involve some fiddling around with things and placement). As to beautiful locations, if a planet has those gorgeous spots, then yes, you can built there - and enjoy the view!

Just as an example, this is an early view of my outpost on Archimedes V-a

Yea, theres TONS of sweet spots to build, & there are even mods to build in the few places you cant, like inside POI, and such.

I have 24 outposts for my massive minding & farming operation, so ive been all around the universe searching for just the right spots, only 23 are for business, one for my home base. I hope we can mod our way to having more outposts though, until then I may find ways using the new cloner mod to reduce my mining/farming count some & give me more space for fun spots. lol
I can't remember the first game I played that properly occluded rain or had collision for it anymore, but I remember when I saw it I was really impressed with it and thinking to myself how much I appreciated it. And ever since then, I always feel the same way when I see that rain doesn't fall in or under objects like bridges or player-placed structures lol. I know it's just taken for granted nowadays but I always enjoy that.

And if you look closely and stand under your spaceship you will see how the ground around the ship gets wet and the ground under the ship stays dry.

It depends on what technique is used, a lot of games do post process screen effects to simulate the rain, its just like a layer over the screen which makes it more difficult to occlude rain, especially in a changing scene where users can build, Im not fully certain how Starfield is doing it, but there does seem to be a particle element to it, since you get nice rain splashes where each drop lands, also objects occlude rain likely based on physics shape for efficiency, and also effects material layers, as Fabienne said above, areas that dont get hit with rain stay dry while everything else becomes wet. I love that they added that in, its a nice touch. Theres more that could be done with flows, drainage, edge drips, & other stuff, but thats not really a focus of this huge game, games without a lot of content tend to go all in on the details because they have time for it, & its needed to add value, a massive game like Starfield has different priorities & performance targets.
