Fallout saw 6 DLCs over 2 years. Starfield has at least 1 more DLC coming next year after that is anyone guess.
My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who heard it fourth-hand, from a neighbour’s friend’s daughter – whom I never met, that Microsoft are putting everything else on the backburner and pushing everything into Starfield. I guess their taking the game pretty serious.
So supporting Starfield for 1 year or 10 years will make no difference to when they develop their next game or how long it takes. Especially since yeah, Microsoft WILL be asking for milestones by certain points.
They're still "supporting" Skyrim and Fallout 4, and Skryim especially is old. New games will happen no matter what.
More importantly though, who cares? The game is enjoyable to me as it is in its present form. I'm not an investor. What do I care about their losses or profits? I'm just enjoying my video game.

I get a feeling that we're going to see a lot of "mini-DLCs" through the Creations store though.
There haven't been any losses.
"It's intentionally made to be played for a long time," said Todd Howard in an interview about Starfield with the AIAS Game Maker's Notebook Podcast back in September.
"It's one of things we've learned from our previous games," Howard said. "From Skyrim, from Fallout, that people want to play them for a very long time. So Starfield, I would say, was the most intentional going into it. This is a game people are going to play for a long time."
There are many sources for this, for example https://www.pcgamer.com/todd-howard-says-starfield-was-made-to-be-played-for-a-long-time-but-a-month-after-launch-im-already-drifting-away/
