Do companions use items?
I mean like medpacks, food, frostwolf, heart+ etc.? If they have them in inventory.

i dont think so , but im a newbs who only used vasco and sarah so far , and i observe these about them

- they use weapons but never used up their ammo , i equip sarah with a laser rifle ORION fully modded and 200 round of ammo , she never even used 1 ammo after lots of firefights

- companion go down in combat and taking damage from enemy attack , but for some reason they get up again after a time

- i equipped a grenade (just 3) to sarah and she throw it constantly and never deplete the stock of that 3 grenades i gave her.. and omg her throwing skill is deadly TO MYSELF if it is inside cramped room..

NOTED that this behavior is identical to FALLOUT IV companions.
Give a companion in FO IV a mini-nuke launcher and 1 ammo, they end up with the Hollywood 6 shooter revolver that never runs dry.
Further note>>> doing this means they will almost ALWAYS fire short and catch you in the blast zone!

I give them a legendary weapon, 1x ammo and a frag grenade
They dont use ammo so have unlimited grenades
Some NPC like the Creation Robin Locke just excel in combat and never die, I have never seen Robin go down and she will clear an entire enemy boarded ship sometimes by herself if the enemy start shooting her.
I have never seen them use a medpack

No. They will pick up weapons and ammo though. I honestly hate this because I'm stealth-built and here comes my companion with some new laser sight pickup. If you equip them, though, they seem to stop. That or it's part of Improved Follower Behavior. Also, there are some skills that will emulate companions using items.

Your companion should only need 1 bullet, etc for the gun they are using and 1 Grenade equipped.

It is absolutely guaranteed with 100% certainty that a companion thrown grenade will bounce off something and land at your feet. Something haven't changed since Fallout 3 haha.
This. Most times when I get the grenade alert in a fight, it's Andreja trying for a tk again.

Have they ever used items you gave them in previous games? I've honestly never given an npc a potion, or stimpak. They are usually essential so why waste something you could use more effectively on yourself.

I asked because I seem to recall that is some previous game if you gave NPC's a certain item (not sure which) they would use it up real fast. I do recall there was at least one game where NPC's would use some form of healing item if you gave it to them, but again not sure in which. And although I'm not sure, I remember giving Sam 10 cans of something and he only gave back 8...

To be honest, if you gave me 10 cans of 'something' you wouldn't get any back, and I'd probably be slurring my words.:steamhappy:

I give them Impact grenades. Problem solved.

In Skyrim, NPCs will use some potions - but only ones that are standard vanilla, not ones that you craft.

I tried to get Sarah drunk but Sarah didn't like that.
Yeah that doesn't seem right, I can't see the character refusing infinity glasses of wine under any circumstances

Rule number one: never give your follower a grenade. Explosives and toothbrushes are for your personal use only.
Rule number two: get rid of the followers as soon as you complete their personal quests. Otherwise they will rob you of XP.
aiden i think thats his name is the only companion who is bugged uses ammo unless its been patched so what weapon you give him doesnt matter once ammo is gone he'll switch to base gun carried... and im not sure about them using items everything ive ever given them stays in there inventory

I hear that. I definitely do not upgrade their weapons in those cases where I want the xp :)
