It does work on the Deck and, as of the last few patches, does actually run quite well. The problem is this game is heavily reliant on ranged combat. The screen is so tiny that distant enemies are extremely difficult to target, especially in cover. You'll also be playing on low, low settings, so it won't be pretty. Smaller screen offsets that a bit, but you'll want to dock it, I am sure, eventually. So, no, I would not recommend it on the Deck right now. You'd be better off going for an XBX than waiting for full Deck support. The hardware just isn't there to make it enjoyable imo.

The game is amazing for a v1 release, and stable, I just got 3 crashes in 80h.
Starfield is a must have for me. And yes I have a Steam Deck and 100% playing on it.
See it's a comment like this that makes starfield on the deck seem alright, but theres so many others that don't like it.
seems to me most of them say it is certainly playable, but some say it's not great... granted just the fact you'd have to play in 720p if using the built in screen is a going to get some people to say no.
In short, this is an advanced Nintendo Switch
Technically it is a computer optimized for gaming(you can run everything running on a computer on it except a few limitation with online anti cheats), with a primary objective, to run games designed for Windows without a Desktop running in the background (Gamemode technology)
Also when a store page mention that a game is not supported on Steam Deck, it just means the game has not been send to the Valve validation Process
But users are more trusting since years the ProtonDB.com validation process, the mass of user reports posted on this site is enough to see if a game is borked on Linux or not, and if there is, what to do to run a game.
Actually I play on 1080p with an OLED mobile screen and so far I didn't need to enable the FPS counter because I found myself more perturbed by it attempting to reach the best numbers rather than enjoying the game and just playing.
Overally it ranges from 20 to 40 fps I believe, just don't expect to push Ultra settings and stable 60 fps on the device, 30 fps is visually enough up to 1080p mobile screen
(I just play on Low with dynamic resolution and movie grain disabled)
PS: screenshots I posted of the game can give you an idea of Low quality it is not that bad as you can see, I take them all at 1080 on my OLED mobile screen
