Weapon choices - ballistics or lasers?
Should I major in both or does one or the other have more choices ?

You already know the answer

Ballistics are generally the better choice due to having the vast majority of options.

However, Lasers (4) turns the humble cutter into the most powerful weapon in the game, followed by a modded Equinox.

I am not so sure about that since my va-ruun rifles spits death with 800 or so damage.

There are a greater variety of kinetic weapons but they all use different calibers so good luck keeping them fed. Lasers have the cutter, one pistol, one rifle, and one better rifle, with two ammo types between them. Damage is pretty balanced between both types.

Particle weapons spank them both.

Isn't that the gun that is broken and accepts damage increases from perks that it shouldn't?

But even with that said, yes, particle beams are great, but percentage damage is better, especially when it stacks and can be applied as quickly as it can be with the cutter.

Whatever your character would use. They're all viable. There isn't really a "best" weapon. For example, my magsniper has a base damage of something like 500 or 600 (with skills applied) then add conditional multipliers like sneak/surprise, plus charge up, I can already one shot almost anything at like level 42 or so (when I got it). But it's pretty useless in interiors where you'd need to hip shoot with it without charging and yeah, you may get the first guy, but speed is important, especially with melee Spacers that rush you. Right now I'm mostly using the Ambassador and a Beowolf sniper conversion for close to mid range, and occasionally a shotgun (I forget which) and shattering wakizashi. My specialization is in pistols. The Ambassador does a little over 300 base right now, but with Stealth multipliers it, as well, can pretty much head shot anything in range.

Haven't heard of them yet. Keep talking Starfield.

ME WANT NOW!
Easy answer...both!! Lots of guns use both...i personnaly love the big bang shotgun and it has both damages on it and even if it doesnt ''spit out death'' super fast, i love fighting with shotguns in these games

Right now the best weapon in the game is particle beams. It gets bonuses from both the Particle Beam skill AND the laser skill, and it's already a very solid choice even with no skills at all. Making it the clear winner in terms of shear damage potential.

But expect them to eventually fix the fact that the laser weapon skill bonuses are applied to particle beams. It's clearly a bug.

Also note, this applies only to player weapons, not ship weapons. Ship particle beams are good, but they do not benefit from the Laser Weapon Systems skill.

I can't count higher than 600! You are way to big for me. Also *SUCK* at aiming. I want a high accuracy!

Are particle beams laser tech?

Particle Beams are their own tech, seperate from Lasers and Ballistics. Thave their own skill. named "Particle Beams". It's on the 2nd row of the combat skill tree.

Right now they do also benefit from the Lasers skill, but that's a bug. it will be fixed (eventually).

Ballistic are most powerful in this game.

Smackdown!

This is the Particle Beam weapon rifle I use in my current game. It's devastating.

I originally didn't have the Particle Beam weapon skill (I had gone ballistics) and had given it to Andreja, but she was one-shotting a lot of things, so I took it back and spent skill points in particle beams.

I also have a particle beam shotgun that I use pretty frequently which is just as deadly.

Note that the stats shown in that screenshot are with the particle beams skill at rank 4, and lasers at rank 1. Weapon stats that you see in game do reflect your skill perk bonuses.
