I saw stuff about it on youtube but reddit might be your best bet.
For example:
Piloting 2 gives your ship more speed (30% boost apparently, better than the 20% that engines gives)
Piloting 3 gives your ship a green energy bar
Completely different than your skill and not explained in-game
A ship crew boosts your skills with theirs yes, letting you focus on the gaps you have. I've got one that gives me money also, that's always good.
They banter but sadly only the lawful good main ones, which is an ovesight. My ship is so big that I don't find them blocking me much, sometimes on an unlucky placement. As someone said it makes the lifeless space hulk I have built feel less lifeless.
This is far from perfect or finished but you can toggle it to show you crew locations or skills in a list format.

Under the starfield companions comparison table.
The UC Generally have lawful good crew members, which is a flaw in this game, giving only that alignment the banter/extra stats/quest dialogue. That said i've got a half dozen crew now that don't care about what I choose to do, have some location commentary, carry items, and they are all useful in a fight.
*Mathias is missing from this, If you side with him and do the fleet questline (and side with the fleet) is how you unlock him. He's no better than a regular crew member however.
am over 20hrs in and having completed old neighbour. sarah's mood swings are giving me pain
My crew is currently:
Jessamine - Neutral Smuggler, she's my go-to follower and has been great. (Key)
Mathias - Fleet (Key)
Dani Garcia - Neutral Scientist (Neon)
Sophia Grace - Ex Discipline (Neon) *Bit of an idealist but doesn't complain.
Ezekiel and Lyle Brewer are my new recruits, seem okay so far. (Akila City) They may be trouble when I pirate freestar stuff we'll see.
On outposts i've got others, like Lin and Heller. Anyone who has got no faction listed is a good choice.
I also run with Sam and Sarah often enough, but not when we are doing anything interesting :D Sarah because she's an extra you can add to the crew, without using up a slot, and Sam because he's got an extra passenger that hangs around in the mess hall.
But yeah for the most part I leave the UC ladies and gents well behind.
A few other neutrals i've across are Andromea Kelper, Amelia Earhart and Mickey Caviar. Just check the link.
Your ship is not brick like enough :D. If you want a big crew build a 4x5x4 space hulk.
