How do you remove the HUD before you take a screenshot?

Don't think you have to. Every time I have taken a screenshot it gets rid of the UI for me.

I believe you need to be in photo mode (esc menu) and then you can press T to hide the UI / HUD.

If you're in the Photo Mode, on the controller you press Y.
Although if you're using the in game prompt "take photo" you don't really need ot hide it, unless you're taking a screenshot with Steam's F12 (or whatever key you've assigned).

Out of the photo mode, I haven't tried in Starfield, but in Fallous 4, you bring up the command console with ~, and type "tm" and it should hide the UI.

tm again to revert.

That is if the commands are the same.
Be mindful some console commands disable achievements.

Just a friendly bit of advice, if you're trying to use the photo mode and gallery to take a screen shot, you can. BUT, if you're using a controller and then hit F12, the cursor will popup, ruining the shot, so you have to switch to kb (pressing T to hide the UI works) first, then hit F12.
