Starfield: Comfortable Interiors?
So, with Starfield having been added to GeForce Now, I am now seriously considering playing it. One thing in particular attracted me to the game: ship (and to a lesser extent, station) interiors. I always wanted to walk around my ship in Elite Dangerous, but for some reason that promise has never been fulfilled. No Man's Sky has freighters, but the game is a bit non-tactile for me.

For some reason, the idea of physically walking around inside a vehicle, making it a base I can take with me, is uniquely compelling for me as a someone who enjoys exploring from the comfort of my bed. Besides NMS's freighters, other good examples are the Cyclops / Seatruck from Subnautica, the drilltanks from Volcanoids, and the airship from Forever Skies. How well does Starfield satisfy that fantasy?

I don't normally like bumping, but the discussions scroll so fast (and are filled with weird anti-woke conspiracy theory nonsense) that I've got little choice.

i havent tried to put things in and around the inside of the ship, i just use the storage containers, but im pretty sure the stuff stays unless you modify your ship so you could not only walk around (like in star citizen) but you could decorate it as well. what you cant do is design the inside like you can your outpost with furniture. if that is ever a mod, it is gonna be a gamechanger.

If you can link your habs correctly its great. The thing that annoys most people is the ladder placement. You cannot see the interiors while building and the ladders will just follow an algorithm. You can use companionways to force ladder links.

You can make some huge interiors in the game and can fulfill all your crafting needs, add crew posts, passenger seats (for passenger mission quests).

I really like being able to create my own ship and walk around it inside and out though.

A problem with decorating the interior with clutter though is if you change home ship (either capturing another or manual swapping) all that clutter is stripped and goes to the cargo hold.
You can design your ship and you can walk around its interior. However, just in the interest of knowing in advance what you're getting, while this doesn't bother me personally, you mentioned Elite Dangerous and NMS, so you should be aware this game does not feature seamless flight into/out of planets, flight in atmosphere, or lengthy flights in space. It's all handled via fast travel. (Though, you can manually fly between planets and even star systems, it's in real time and would take forever and there's no fast forward option, so in practical use it serves no purpose.)

I´d say Starfield can satisfy that fantasy as long as you dont expect too much. All Modules are available from different Brands which all have their own style/interior, which cant be edited but put together in mix and match style. There are also Modules that serve no actual purpose but that are nice to have, like Captains quarters or armories.
Aside from that you have freight modules (inventory) aswell as science and workshop modules for crafting and modifiying gear.

While I wish I could properly fly around, that's not actually a dealbreaker. Volcanoids doesn't let you properly drive your drill tank (instead you select predefined emergence points through a minigame), but it still works just great for me. Watching the volcano erupt through my periscope while I'm safe inside my tank is enough to trigger the cozy feeling.
So I just learned Starfield has plush toys I can collect, so that would help the immersion alot. All it needs is waifu pillows and some thick blankets and it'll be just like my real-life bed.

I'd wait for patches if decorating is your thing, right now object tend to randomly sink in to whatever they're placed on, it's very annoying.

I have a lot of fun with the Ship design and interiors in Starfield. Like a LOT of fun. At 110 hours in, I was still flat broke because I keep spending every available penny I earn on Ship customization (and I'm not using the Outpost production method for get-rich-fast).

I quite literally was swapping out my "hab" modules, which determine the interior of the ship every chance I could, so I could see all the different interiors.

I also collect the plushies. It's a bit of a hassle to have to re-place them every time I change the ship, but I do it any way.

You can create a flying base with all the amenities you desire. That's what I'm currently doing on my 4500 cargo ship build. However, do keep in mind, you'll have to be pretty high level in order to unlock the higher level Reactors, Grav Engines, and Engines to be able to lift, push, and fly the thing.

It's taken me to about level 28 before I was able to more or less make it possible. But the closer you are to level 60 the easier it will be. Additionally, expect it to be very expensive into the 100 of thousands of credits.

So yes, it's absolutely doable just that it will take you a while. However, even on smaller builds you can walk around and chat with your crew and passengers.

I really wish Elite Dangerous had that.

i loved Elite Dangerous, but I too dreamed of being able to walk around in my ship. I think this game nails it pretty well. I'm basically playing it very similar to how i role-play in Elite Dangerous. I'm basically a space trucker and the cool thing is, i can design my own ship exactly how i want it (within the confines of their editor of course). I've spent as much time in the ship builder as i have actually playing the game, and it doesn't disappoint. I would look for a guide that lists all the ship manufacturers and how they differ. Hopetech has a good space trucker feel.

I just put a research hab and a manufacturing hab in my ship so has most of what I need. You can customize your ship to some extent by choosing the different variations of the habs and putting them together how you like. The ship is mostly a glorified cargo storage, but you can get the vibes you are looking for making it feel like a home base.

The best part is if you manage to get up while your grav drive is out after they have sunk. Bethesda physics explosion commence! You can also do this with a couple of [REDACTED] you get from playing the main quest. Or just lob a grenade. Or occasionally climb a ladder. Had some random tanks pop out of the wall once when I grabbed a ladder.

Yeah, that's honestly the biggest barrier to me getting the game right now; that changing a module sends all your knick-knacks to the cargo hold, so decorating can feel somewhat pointless. Is that on the list of things Bethesda intends to fix?
