How to increase crew size on my ship?
I added a habitat module to the Frontier that is rated at 2 crew in addition to the stock habitat rated at 2 crew but my ship is still only rated at 2 crew instead of the expected 4?

It's in the skills somewhere. I think you can get up to 5.

I found a ship on Kreet which I could just take.
It had a cockpit which allowed 4 crew members.

Now if only all ten ships could each have their own crews of 5

Also your reactor level has an impact, at leas for how many crew can be assigned to a ship. I upgraded my reactor, and got an extra crew slot. The habitat is rated for 2 passengers, not crew. There is a crew module that adds 4 crew seats.

The ship crew rating is regardless of any skill, just how many you can actually assign is based on skill. The crew mechanic isn't good explained in the game and from what I figured by experimenting, some modules will provide crew slots but that's not enough, you need to have stuff on your ship like weapons etc. that actually use up those crew slots. Works perfectly for me, it's easy to get the crew slots up to 8 or more on any ship I build.

Like the colony system, it is very poorly explained ingame.

you need modules that add crew stations. The base amount you can have without perks is 3 crew. Passenger slots and crew stations are not the same. The control center will give you 4. Some cockpits give like 2. So thats 6. But still need points into perks to be able to put 6 on the boat.

I can get up to 9 people om my current ship. ( I only have 7 right now.)

Ah OK...skills. And ship captain is top tier? so it'll be a while before I add more crew I suppose.

Now what's the relationship between fuel consumption and range? Because the Frontier can jump 16 light years. Jemison to Bessel III is 14.4 light years but it only cosumes 16.04 fuel units out of 50 fuel units. So it seems it should be able to jump further?

Jump range and fuel capacity are two separate things. Fuel capacity and jump range are determined by entirely different parts on the ship.

Just because you have the fuel doesn't mean your ship can jump that far. Put a bigger fuel tank on your ship without changing anything else and you will use even less % of your total fuel for jumping, but you will likely have an even lower jump range, because mass affects how far you can jump too.

Ok so I can add one more without any skill increase?

Check "Help" section in-game. There are a lot of explanation. Crew included.

Huh. It never occurred to me for the game to even have one.
Yet, now that you mentioned it I clearly remember seeing one.
Weird.

We are so "trained" for help sections to be rather unhelpful that we fail to see and look in the obvious sections when we truly need an explanation.
