The test is to get a second ship, and rip off an engine [or something] in a place that does not sell that engine, and see if it becomes available for the other ship.
No. Vendors sell specific items. Deimos has a yard in Mars with all the goodies you could want for their ships. You do not scavenge ship parts afaik.
I'm afraid I just tried exactly this and it doeesn't work. I took off and deleted some landing gear, exited the ship, swapped to the one I wanted the gear on and tried to buy back the landing gear and it wasn't on his list, either as a buyback or as a normal purchase.
So, you may own 10 different ships, you can only modify 1 of them at a time and you need to buy the parts you don't have for it.
