its a real big facepalm moment
"You" is grammatically plural, but that doesn't stop people from using it in the singular. Words mean what people use them for. They/them is singular when referring to one individual.
I raised this example in another topic, but case in point: If I'm cis, but wish to create a character that has aesthetic traits society might have traditionally deemed differently coded, I can now do that with total freedom and then separately apply whatsoever pronouns I want because the two (aesthetics and how the game refers to me) aren't inseparably linked anymore.
So by providing options for other players, I also get freer customization too. It's a win-win in my book. Being able to create whatever appearance I want, and choose how NPCs refer to me, is a great roleplaying tool. People act as if I should feel something is being foisted upon me when in actuality I feel that options have been expanded for everyone, myself included.
Eh, there's a bit of nuance with that one. Widespread use of French in England post 12th century had the French word "vous" drive the singular nominative "thou". As a result of the two, "you" became a general form of address. When referencing two people for example, we would say "You two" rather than just "you" because it would not indicate whether it is for both or not.
But it's not really about the inclusion. The point everyone's managed to (conveniently) miss so far is the fact that it's FORCED into the game. So the "why you proud boy pitch fork holding maga's gettin' so triggered by the option to choose your pronoun" is a moot point. Something that is forced is not "an option". People are irritated because it's only something less than 1% of any populous on Earth would ever bother using, and out of pretty much all of that less than 1%, none of them appeared to be affected in any way by it not being a forced choice in any other game before this. 🤷🏻♂️
OMFG they've also forced heterosexuality and strong independent females into the GAME.
Yeah, that's how stupid you sound.
In a restaurant, having an option to have ketchup on you fries is not forcing you to have ketchup on your fries.
You are a sad little person, who's whole life has been reduced to throwing tantrums online. You won life.
