Is it even possible to build a ship from scratch?
Whenever I try to build a ship from the ground up it always gives an error which removes my ability to finish the ship. I dont even add much to it from what the base ships have.

What error do you get?

I haven’t hit this problem. Stupid job and all.

Yeah don't be thinking you can just make like an odd shaped ship, you have to have struts, living spaces, cargo etc.
Got a pic of what you're trying to build? might help

If you click on [testflight] I think it was, it will tell you what errors you have preventing construction. Some of the basic stuff includes that you can only have 1 reactor or shield module.

Some errors can be ignored like not having weapons assigned and you can still complete the build without them.

Is there a way to actually build a ship from scratch? As opposed to deleting everything off an existing ship and doing it that way.

No, not that I know, you had to buy ship to do that, (I wouldn't do that with constellation frontier, because it's not only just a original but very unique ID, you wouldn't want to mess it, just limited to upgrade to be safe but not mess with build with this ship)

the easiest workaround, is to literally take a ship from a landing site or space combat, highlight the whole thing and delete it... then build the ship you want, but you always need core features like mentioned above.

This. Go steal one and wipe it clean. Easy to do on any planet, just land and watch the skies for another ship to land, run over, board, kill the pilots. All yours

Yea, there´s a few pitfalls with the ship builder but it´s not that complicated. One of every category, stuff like cockpits, reactors and shields are limited to 1.
Plus as many engines you need, mostly limited by the 12 energy pips, look what energy they need. Same with weapons.
And 1 landing gear per 200 mass your ship has.
Assign your weapon groups under flight check and don´t lose any parts by dragging them off screen wich results in an error you can´t get ridd of. There may be warnings if you don´t assign all 3 weapon groups but that doesn´t matter.
Bam, you´ve got a ship.

Edit: Forgot about the size limit. Don´t build ships longer than 80m. The measure on the ground measures from the middle. So 40m front and 40m back is the limit. Don´t know what the other limits are, never hit them.

I really wish there was just a 'build new ship' option, rather than this whole 'Ship of Theseus' route they took.. I'm trying to be 'good' this playthrough, no grand-theft-space-auto, so I'm relegated to ship capture, which I'm having more trouble with than I care to admit.... tonight I'm going to try the mission board method I've seen posted around, see if that doesn't keep it to one smaller ship I can *actually* pilot.

The "C" key will show you the missing or incompatible parts.

One common mistake, is having the cockpit blocked, or the airlock dock blocked by other ship parts.

Step one: read the error message
Step two: fix the problem

Yeah but there is a pitfall. When you delete the parts you a credited for the ship in money. This helps offset the costs. Completely from scratch is more expensive. If you want to build a fairly decent size ship defeat sone bad guys with one and use that are your base so you get the cost credit.
