could also just be, you know, an update for the unreleased game, something they have been doing for like a year now.
do people really not know what a day 1 patch is? people legit just use it as some kind of weird buzzword now.

Day 1 patches are prepared ahead. I guess you didn't understand that. A Day 1 patch is the patch ready for the first day of access. This is, more or less, how it works:
Game goes gold.
Gold game goes to review.
Missed bugs are found during review.
Day 1 patch is prepared to squash bugs.
Game is released. This is DAY 1.
You try to start the game.
Game connects to servers, says game needs to be patched, so 'here comes your patch...'
Patch is applied DAY 1.
Ta! Da! You've been patched on Day 1 of release.
a day 1 patch, as you say, will be released on DAY 1 of release, not days before, Its just a patch for the game that they have been doing for almost a year.
pretty much why the game is now version 1.7 and not 1.0
also steam have some decent compression when it comes to downloading, so the download size should be smaller than the xbox PC download size.
