Can I play this from an external SSD?
Forgive me if this isn't the right forum for this topic. Mods can move if necessary. My question is: can I play this game from an external SSD connected to a 3.0 USB port, and will that affect performance? Bit of a tech noob so any input is appreciated. Thanks.

Unlikely - SSD is required because physical HDD are to slow , so using external SSD missing the point as you speed of SSD will be caped by USB connection to PC ...

Off the top of my head I'd think USB would limit it to below speeds that (at least some) internal SSDs are capable of, particularly the M.2 drives. But whether the game would reach that limit in the first place I have no idea. If they've been more specific about its needs than "not a hard drive" I haven't seen it.

I do think it should still be faster than a hard drive, so I would not entirely rule it out.

Do a speed test, if you got around 500 MB/s read and write speed and decent IOPS you are good to go. Just google any Samsung SATA SSD and compare it to your values, if it's similar it's all good.

How do I do this? I have both 3.0 and 3.2 USB ports

Just test and compare it. I got "Samsung Magician" for that.

Google is your friend.

I think most ppl use "Crystaldiskmark".

winsat disk -seq -read -drive c
winsat disk -seq -write -drive c
winsat disk -ran -read -drive c
winsat disk -ran -write -drive c
Cheers. I'll be trying this

This has come up elsewhere and, in my experience, even a USB3 external SSD rarely performs much better than a good quality mechanical drive...

A good internal 500gb SATA SSD should cost no more than maybe $30-$40, so you'd be much better off just picking up one of those before launch...

I just tried that out with my Samsung 990 Pro 2 TB with Heatsink.
It spat out this:
Disk Sequential 64.0 Read 6007.09 MB/s 9.8
Disk Sequential 64.0 Write 6687.41 MB/s 9.9
Disk Random 16.0 Read 2152.20 MB/s 9.3
Disk Random 16.0 Write 218.61 MB/s

This isn't right, it should be 7419 MB/s read, 6920 MB/s write. And the other 2 values are completly different it's measured differently.

I'm assuming that's the drive's maximum rated values... Those values are not gauranteed... *shrug*

I'd say it's probably performing fine, personally...

Run a few more and see what it averages out at, maybe...

I measured the 7419 and 6920 with Samsung Magician and that actually makes much more sense than having FASTER write speed than read speed.

I tried it a few times it didn't change much, using these command prompt commands.

There is a reason ppl use third party software.

Yeah, I can't remember the one I used to use... Lost it when my SSD died...

I guess it's possible that the read is being affected by general activity on your PC at the moment or something, which is not impacting the write performance, perhaps?

Sure this could be, but what should i do start windows in debug mode? Nah i am too lazy for that.

There must be a reason other benchmarks are longer, that is to rule out system activity.

Here's my recommendation: Invest in an M.2 NVME SATA SSD enclosure adapter that supports USB 3.2. This setup will blaze past any regular SSD with speeds up to 10Gbps. Consider something along these lines: https://www.amazon.com.au/SSK-Aluminum-Enclosure-Adapter-External/dp/B07MNFH1PX Naturally, you'll have to purchase an M.2 NVME SATA SSD.
