Vintage Firearms
I'm very impressed by the variety of firearms shown in Starfield. During the Direct, it seems like you hardly see the same one twice.

Something I noticed though is, that there are a few guns that are basically 20th century weapons, and I'm not sure what to make of that. So here I am turning to the forums.
Link for convenience and then a small list.

34:52 Colt .45 / M1911 or rather one of its later variants.

38:45 Pump action shotgun. I don't know whether this is a specific model, I can't tell the many similar weapons apart very well.

39:26 VSS Vintorez, mostly seen in the weapon icon on the bottom right, but the brief glimpses of it past the character seem to fit.

40:58 AK, one of the many versions.

The Kalashnikov especially makes me think that these are not supposed to be modern weapons that just happen to look like our contemporary ones, because then why would they use some of the most well known weapons as models, and also relatively old ones by today's standards.

Could it be that we'll be able to find some actual 20th century weapons somewhere? Maybe in old ruins in Sol system, or in isolated communities that preserved them since leaving earth?

Well, the M1911 is timeless, I'd be shocked if we were still using it in 50,000 years.

Well StarWars has slugbusters~ which is ballistic firearms to use against force users so not so surprising.

Note that Starfield has a lot of weapon mods and because they're "future" guns, the actual guns also have a bunch of greebles & additional details to make them distinct from the real versions.

Grendel is a P90.
Beowulf is a Famas
Eon looks like a USP with an underbarrel taser or something.
Drumbeat is similar to a Pancor Jackhammer.
There's also a Mac-10 body with a long barrel.
Razerback is a Serbu Super Shorty.
Allied Negotiator is a Milkor M32A1 grenade launcher.
One of the laser rifles appears to be based on the M249 light machine gun.
There's a rifle that's clearly based on the HK XM8 but with a filled in carry handle for the scope mount, and a front handgrip.
One gun has an outline that looks like an AKS-74U with a Zenitco stock.

More speculative, there's one sniper rifle that looks like it might be based on the QBU-88 sniper rifle and another which I think is built around the SCAR-L.

While current tech mirrors would not be able to deflect laser weaponry, that might not hold true for future "reflective armor" tech. Which might then reopen the market for ballistics, or even make them somewhat necessary. Just throwing out conjecture. I personally don't see any issues with ballistic and energy weapons coexisting.

If it ain't broke...

Many modern firearms have designs that work for what they're intended to do. There's not much iteration needed on them, so it's not surprising some designs wouldn't change much.

I'm just waiting for the gameplay clip where they showcase literal fire arms.

I also think ballistic firearms definitely have a place in the setting. They have many modernized sci-fi versions of them in the game, which is great.

It was just odd to see that for the weapons I mentioned in particular, they look exactly like the real things. Whereas in the rest there were clear similarities, as Mack listed above, but no exact likenesses.

Which makes me think that they intend the 4 guns from the OP to be the actual original weapons. Strange as it may seem, there could be an explanation for this. But I suppose we can only conjecture.

I don't think cockroaches have hands. The meek shall inherit the earth. And that is about the meekest creature I can think of that will survive.

I'm surprised we haven't seen an AR-15 or something like that

Ballistic weapons have a distinct advantage over energy weapons.

1) You don't run out of power
2) Energy weapons can be countered with ablative armor or energy absorbing fields

They have disadvantages, too, but if they're available for ships, a railgun is devastating.

Yet.

Well, I'm glad the weapons are in. I can rest assured that with the .45 there's a handgun I like a lot, that I wouldn't mind carrying throughout the game. Still curious whether there'll be any explanation or comment on their old fashioned design.
